Buying car out of states

My buddy wants to purchase a pre owned e90 M3 in NY but he's locating in Burbank CA. Dealer told him that he must drop by to get the transactions done. He doesnt want to fly that far and he already got the loan approved. Not sure if he really needs to stop by the dealer, anyone knows ?

I would travel to go and see it. I'd rather do a visual inspection before taking delivery.

no he doesn't. His bank/credit union/ etc. should deal directly w/ the dealer. they will send the dealer the docs and your buddy can finalize it when he goes to pick up the car. The dealer probaly doesn't think he's serious. Leave a small deposit if he really wants it.

I have bought a few cars out of state/sight unseen so I have an idea what's required.

Dealer states that he has to show up to sign for registration and all the stuff. Maybe dealer isnt taking him seriously?

Depending on the state and the dealer.

this is what mail is for if it's really needed, but he should be able to do this when he picks the car up. The do the regi that day as well as plates so I don't get it. Maybe time to find a new dealer.

Actually, it's dealer prerogative wether they require you to be present or not. Most do not.

When I was looking for my M3 these last 5 months I looked nation wide. Had 2 great deals on LRPs that were only hundreds of dollars over invoice that I had to turn down because they required me to be present during signing. These were deals that took days to complete, so it's not like they didn't want this to happen.

But throughout that search I found that most dealers didn't care wether the buyer was there or not.

no need, can do it all via email/PDF or fax. If dealer suspects he's not serious, a big old deposit check or full payment would change their mind.

I am in NC and bought 55k car from dealer in OK without ever going there. Did everything over phone, signed papers via FedEx and had car shipped to my home.

It was a CPO and I was dealing with proper dealer, so not seeing a car was not a huge issue for me. They claimed it was mint and sent me many photos.
