Damn I hate cleaning ZCP Wheels

I know its been mentioned before but I just finished handwashing my baby and DAMN I hate clean dirty 359 wheels. Takes for ever to get in between the spokes. Iam hightly tempted to get them powder coated matte black just to avoid having to spend 5 mins per wheel.

Ha. So true. I just finished waxing mine -- but didn't have the will to clean the zcp wheels. So my car has a distinctly mullet flair.

Try this:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=766633

I clean with Griots Heavy duty wheel cleaner, costs 1/2 of the sonax and works just as well.

Also, get yourself some of these.

Mine are satin black. Every time I get ready to wash the car, I go through a self preparation ritual pumping myself up to wash those damn wheels. It has gotten to the point to when I look at wheels on other cars, I immediately compare them to 359 wheel cleaning time. I blow off washing the car because I dont want to deal with the wheels... Im going out in a min to do it.

I want some DPE CS5...

You know what's funny? ZCP with brake dust look great (greyish color). I might just powdercoat them in that color or chrome shadow.

But yes, one of the reasons why I don't wash my car as often as I should. And I have a small powerwasher too! It's a monumental task everytime.

Exactlly dude. The wheels ARE the absolute reason why I have become so lazy in washing the car myself. I usually Op to just take it to a local detailing shop that does hand washes and just pay to avoid the misery. In all honestly when I first got the car I would hand wash it every weekend but now Ive become so lazy about it.

LMFAO!!!!! I swear I have literally have to take a moment to prepare myself mentally before undertaking the wheel cleaning challenge. If the mental pregame psyching doesnt work then its a few shots of jack daniels.

Swap out the pads to something less dusty. When I had my E46 M3 and had a set of RAC RG4s I had the same hatred. Then I got my Brembo kit and holy crap, what a world of difference pads made. It was still a chore to clean out every nook but the amount of effort was way less. My RS110's were even easier.

One secret I've found is in lieu of Sonax wheel cleaner I've found that scalding hot water, dish washing liquid in a bucket and a wheel brush work really well on these wheels. Cuts through the brake dust like a knife through butter on my car. Disclaimer, I never let brake dust get caked on in the first place so I don't know how effective it will be if you do. But this works great if only a few days build up. This is probably gentler on the wheels than the Sonax but I have no evidence to back up the claim.

I washed my wheels for the first time this morning after putting opticoat 2.0 on them over a week ago. I hit them with the power washer and the brake dust just vanished and rinsed away. You guys should try it for sure.

Awesome to hear that the OptiCoat worked! My wheels are so filthy right now (especially the front) that it kind of looks like the shade of grey we were talking about painting our wheels

I remember cleaning ZCP style wheels on an e46 m3 and it being a pain. I don't think the OEM 18s are that bad, but I'm not as anal about cleaning the inner barrel. The ZCPs have more of an open style so probably have to make sure that area was clean.

It would take me an hour just to do the wheels alone on the car. 5 mins will probably give you a quick clean over.

I wish there was a true spray on hose off solution that would not destroy the finish.

Cleaning ZHP wheels sucks for sure but they look great once you are done cleaning them.

I'm with all of you who became lazy due to not wanting to wash the ZCP wheels. I was the same way, and it was not uncommon at all for me to go nearly a month between washes (..Alpine White became Alpine Brown). It would take at least 45 minutes to thoroughly clean the wheels; that's longer than it took to wash the whole darn car. I will say this....

....when those 359's are clean, they look goooooooooooood!

I'm really surprised by this thread. With some P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner and EZ Detail Brush it literally takes me no more than 10 minutes for all 4 wheels.

I would not want flat black wheels. They actually look dirtier with brake dust than silver wheels. I had flat black wheels before on my car about 10 years ago..

The brake dust comes off as a brownish color. On silver it makes the wheels look grey. On black wheels, the brake dust makes the wheels look a rust-like brown color. Really nasty and it looks like your wheels are rusting. The dirty silver wheels looks 10x better than dirty black wheels.

Your best bet for not having brake dust stand out is a glossy gunmetal color.. like the stock 219M wheels.

I guess you are right dude. I love the look of the grey 359s when they are completely clean. Ive recently become obsessed with black wheels but have never really thought about how the brake dust would look
