Solaris Invisibulbs - for front Signals, how hard to change??
http://www.bimmian.com/SOL/92
i was thinking of ordering these so as i drive in the daytime with the lights off you will not get any hint of yellow... the stock M3 signals actually use this chrome bulb idea as compared to a 335.. yet you can still see yellow as it is more transparent i dont think its possible to just reach the bulb.. Anyone change the bulbs or know how to get to them??? Thanks Mike |

There should be a guide in the owner's manual as to how to change a bulb. You will have to access them from the wheel wells which is not that hard. But are you sure you're buying the correct bulbs for the E92? As far as I know there isn't a correct fitment for the front turn signals.

not sure bout the e92 but on the e90, its very easy to change the bulbs... i just had to turn the wheels one way and open an access panel in the wheel well and switch the bulb out. if you have big hands, you might need to jack the car up and remove the whole wheel ... but its not that difficult... would not take more than an hour even if your jacking the car up.

Will you still get an amber turn signal when switched on with the Invisibulbs, or will it be a white light? They look great, but I thought driving laws dictate an amber turn signal when on. If it's still amber when on, but clear when off, this would be great.

Turn signal light color
Well you can, but you will be in violation of federal standards.
Until the early 1960s, most front turn signals worldwide emitted white light and most rear turn signals emitted red. Amber front turn signals were voluntarily adopted by the auto industry in the USA for most vehicles beginning in the 1963 model year, though front turn signals were still permitted to emit white light until FMVSS 108 took effect for the 1968 model year, whereupon amber became the only permissible color for front turn signals. Side turn signals must also be amber. Only in the rear do you have the choice of red or amber, though amber has been shown to be safer.

* Blue and yellow headlights. Headlights must be white - blue and yellow are illegal (24011 VC). Look for the DOT symbol on the bulb and package. * Headlights brighter or higher wattage than those from the factory. You may be able to see better, but the lights are illegal (24011 VC). * Tail lights other than red (24600 VC). * Illegal brake lights. Brake lights on vehicles newer than 1979 must be red (24603 VC). (Vehicles older than 1979 may be red or yellow.) * Lack of rear reflectors. Two red reflectors are required on the rear of cars and trucks (24607 VC). * Incorrect color of turn signal. It must be white or yellow to the front, red or yellow to the rear (24953 VC). Link is dead, don't know what the new one is. |

FMVSS Section 108 (CCR 571.108) is what applies.

...Thanks everyone contributing to the traffic laws and stuff...I am sure a lot of people find that information useful...although I am pretty sure federal or state laws concerning amber bulbs are NOT going to deter most of installing certain aftermarket parts... hehe
Has someone installed the bulbs already? i am about to order them at Bimmian and I get the feeling not even the salesguy is sure if the bulbs I buy are going to fit. It seems we have to purchase 4 bulbs in total (2 per headlight)...one is a "regular" sized bulb and the other one is very small but powerful too. I think this guy (Kev) already has them on? |

it is my understanding that the front turning bulbs for the E9X M3 are not available..yet.
The bulb in my car anyway is "PY24W" which looks like this:

You are probably right man...the M3 in the pic is a E92. Thanks for the part number though, at least I now know what to order.

...ok...my bad then. It kinda looks like you have the blue solaris bulbs as advertised at Bimmian...they offer a set for the e90 and e92s. I think I will just buy them and try to instal them...when I run with the "auto" light setting on my car, the amber bulbs always turn on...
