Euro delivery with minimal time - maximum fun!
Hi;
October 11: With a day and 1/2 to enjoy driving the new M3, my son & I meet @ Munich Int'l and took a taxi to BMW Welt (Tried to engage Loginout but they were unable to accommodate us). BMW Welt is a wonderful facility in so many ways! While taking care of processing our paperwork, the sales associate confirmed that Stelvio Pass was open! That news determined that we would find a hotel in Merano, Italy that evening. Not the place our nav took us to - that is shown below! Instead, make ure you get to Ansitz Plantitscherhof, a place thatis easier to stay in than to pronounce! It's a German spa-restaurant hotel offering everything you need if you don't feel like moving; done with Euro flair. Pics below include view from our balcony towards Stelvio... Warnings abound about how driving Stelvio is not always such fun due to crowded conditions. We took a chance going in early October and while the pass was wet it was like out own private playground!! We shared the Pass with 5 bikers from Germany. Check out the pictures - my car alone with nobody else around!! And the changing Fall colors were spectacular! Driving Stelvio ended up being like a fantasy. The curves were taken at very low speeds BUT then you could accelerate out of the curves! Yeeeehaaaa!! Hearing our revving V8 reverberate around the Stelvio canyon walls wall surreal; the ultimate soundtrack for the ultimate driving road! To change things up we took Umbrail Pass back towards Germany, via Switzerland, Italy then Austria. Best rest stops I experienced are in Austria. Try one and you will understand - simply amazing places. The Umbrail route was totally different than Stelvio with less side protection, an unpaved portion but less drama overall. But it gave us some of the most spectacular scenery of our drive; dramatic mountains and expansive green valleys. Then small-scale towns and lakes we drove through were pulled right out of picture books. We finally made our way to our 2nd main stop of the day, Mittenwald, Germany, not far from Garmish. This place had been noted as the quintessential German alpine village and it was. What makes it special is that many of the buildings have been painted and much had been restored so it all looks so fresh and unique. Cool place. Then on to the Munich airport including some more Nav frustration - but nothing could diminish our "Mthusiasm"! What a car!! Special thanks to SamS who was a big help to me as I planned this months ago. Also my sales rep, Bob Price @ Ray Catena Westchester BMW in White Plains, NY. Everything in Germany went perfectly! Love my new M3!!! And now for the pics... 1) New M3 on platform @ BMW Welt 2) Nav said hotel in Moreno would be right here! 3) Gorgeous on the way up to Stelvio 4) The message we wanted... 5) All alone on Stelvio! 6) Driving up with beautiful colors 7) Preparing for final assault 8) Top of Stelvio - we made it! 9) Mountains from Umbrail Pass 10)Valley from Umbrail Pass The next day my son was off back to school in Budapest. I washed and dropped the car off at Loginout. Easier said than done but done at last! Great experience and highly recommended. Next time with my wife! |
