m3 dct vs cayman S PDK

I have driven both and I believe the M3 DCT and a PDK equipped gen II Cayman S are close 0-60 and possibly the quarter mile. But in my mind, the M3 is faster in all other situations in a straight line.

Slightly faster?! 2 seconds 0-200 kph (124mph) is a lot....and the gap would keep growing up to the top speed as well.

Are you asking a potential future owner?

Unless you live in the flatlands where all roads meet at right angles, the Cayman S with PDK will stretch your lips from ear to ear. It's a driver's car.

And so is the M3 with DCT while also giving you a backseat.

Does it matter if one is a few tenths faster 0-60 or has a higher ET?

Exactly. And the Cayman will be faster in every situation OTHER THAN 100+mph straight line acceleration (cornering, twisties, braking, etc.) It's also what, nearly a 100hp deficit? Any track times you see with M3 ahead probably have very long straights.

In RL driving though, how often are you seeing the upper end of 5th or 6th gear? How often are you braking hard and taking some nice turns at good speeds?

Fattyk - Take a look at dragtimes.com for what a tuned 335i can do. I was running map 3 or 5 and both were very strong; off the line or from a roll.

This issue has been addressed ad nauseum on this forum but a tuned 335i in a straight line can be a monster.

Cayman S is a fairly brutal sports car. M3 is more of a gentleman's GT car. I would pick the M3 for daily driver, and the Cayman S for the track. I personally found the Cayman S to be too rough for a DD.

I own a 2009 cayman S with PDK and my brother the M3.

I have tracked both the DCT M3 and my 2009 caymanS.

In a straight line they are neck and neck until you get to really high speeds (above 200km/hr)... that's when the M3 will very slowly but eventually gain a slight advantage.

in the corners there is no doubt about it that the Cayman S wins hands down... please dont misunderstan,d the M3 is fabulous but the CaymanS just gives you that much more confidence in the corners with its mid engine layout and the grip is fantastic.

Around a track the caymanS potentially is faster unless as someone stated above the track a has a lot of long straights... and even then im not sure it would win.

just my 2 cents.

Both are great cars and in the real world none of the above matters. the M3 is a better daily driver for sure.

P.S: my cayman S is my DD and it feels great

Does the doppleklung transmission have paddles or buttons on the steering wheel?

Mine has paddles - But I usually let the transmission shift itself with sport mode activated.

The Cayman S is my second car so it is not a daily driver for me but it is more than passable as a dd.

i recently did a test run on my stock PDK cayman S vs a STG3 DSG golf GTI (dynoed at 320whp & 430wnm).
Cayman was quicker off the line to 100km/h as getting traction was no issue for the cayman compared to fwd GTI.
rolling from 100-200km/h was similar
from 200km/h, cayman starts to pull away
I just left the cayman on 'sports plus' mode and let the PDK does the shifting. I must say that PDK shifting was amazingly fast and no power loss was felt between gears!
I was previously on a tiptronic cayman S and the STG3 GTI had easily 5 car length ahead from various runs
next would to test with a remap 335 n also a stock m3 DCT.

mine has buttons but the you can now order the sterring wheel with paddles.

From a very recent encounter with a Cayman S I found there was no comparison in straight line acceleration from 30 mph and up. I easily out accelerated and passed him, in fact I was pleasantly surprised at how much faster I was. We both had WOT but I’ve no idea if it was a PDK or not, only it was a 2009 S.

You're up about 75 horsepower on a caymanS and only a couple hundred pounds heavier. So no surprise there.

And the weight disadvantage and traction disadvantage off the line were removed because it was from a roll. /sigh

Driven on a track, the mid-engine cayman might give you better handling feel but the M3 is faster around the track. All road courses have at least one or two straights so for you to say that the M3 is faster on a track with long straights is quite subjective. Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, NJMP, Limerock, Watkins all have straights that will put the M3 at an advantage. The Cayman might have slightly higher cornering speed but you don't gain much time from cornering speed but rather exit speed to a section of the track where you can go on full throttle.

I have passed many Caymans during HPDE and race events, Car and Driver also placed the M3 faster around VIR at one of the tests a few months back.

I love the Cayman, but I just wish they put slightly more power because that chassis is so darn amazing. I heard that they are releasing a new Cayman Clubsport sometime this year with a bump on power and weight saving. That should be lots of fun..

It's really hard to decide when it comes to make a buying decision.

The clubsport will have an addition 13hp and a bit less than 200lbs less weight.
