Is it just the front bumper? Hard to tell from the close-ups.

No the rear bumper I got rear ended by a van driven by a 78 year young Gentleman ... if I had gone thru my and his insurance he may have had problems to get re-insured. Since he was a nice guy I waited for the cheque for 12 days... finally got it yesterday.

Now that the money is in my account I can proceed with repairs.

Yeah sorry, I meant rear bumper. Nothing structural then? Should be an easy fix.

Oh yes, washed the car 2 days ago ... you really have to look to see the damage. Some score marks and the bumper is misaligned right to left in the transverse direction by about 1/2 inch one can tell as one looks down to the exhaust tips and on the left hand side (bumper to driver side rear fender). Support bracket / brace whatever they call it is also bend.

Crazy how a little bump like that can result in $3,000- repairs.

Sounds like it's a bit high based on what you're saying. Even with a new bumper and bracket and paint, I think you might be overpaying. But it's insurance so I guess it doesn't matter too much.

And people wonder why insurance rates are high with repair bills in some of these new cars simply mind boggling. 8k for a rear bumper and some work it seems like. Its shocking we are not charged more for insurance because the cost to repair cars has drasticaly gone up with the technology and will continue to do so. I am surprised insurance is still that profitable but clearly it is sine its still around

Yes I do agree, only in this case the fellow (78 years of age) paid for it out of his pocket primarily so he can keep driving for a few more years. It would have been very difficult apparently for him to get re-insured also he may have lost his licence. ... So I put the insurance claim on hold, got the cheque yesterday and had my insurance company closed my claims file.

I only did and agreed to this due to his age and he was a war veteran.

My Final Update

Things are never what they seam ........ FINAL UPDATE TODAY NOV. 21, 2011 ... after taking my car to the body shop they discovered that additional parts need to be replaced. Since I agreed with the guilty party that hit me on a cash settlement I will be out some $400- when all is said and done to be paid out of my pocket.

The lesson I've learned here and I share it with you so you will not make the same mistake .... is

"At the outset go with the Insurance and make a report to the Police" ...

It simply does not pay to be Mr. nice guy anymore

Additional cost for broken REAR BUMPER IMPACT BAR (see cracks in pictures below) things that cannot be seen during the estimate.
