oil warning question....

just had to turn around after leaving for a road trip because the add 1 quart oil warning came on and could not find 10w60 anywhere on the way and no dealerships were open. just parked it after about 50 miles of driving with this warning...will all be ok with driving this long with the lift on ? the next stop is my dealer tomorrow which is 5 miles away.

this pisses me off cuz the car just had the oil changed by the dealer about 300 miles ago and I thought the level looked low when I checked right after I picked it up.

any concerns I should have?

The sump is pretty big. Being down a quart for a short period won't be a serious issue.

You should keep a spare bottle with you at all times, BTW.

To my knowledge the only 2 engines that call for the 10w60 is the 4.0 litre V8 in the M3 and the V10 in the previous M5 . If anybody else knows of engines that call for this viscosity speak up. I always keep one in the M3 but also my wife's X5 with the turbo 4.4 that thing needs oil every other month it seems .

I have had my '10 for 6 months and had the warning light come on yesterday and had 5w30 in the trunk which I used. Is this OK to use?

Yes, per the recent bulletin, you can start using LL-01 oils.

Yes, because that's an S62, the same motor as an E39 M5.
