Hit a crow!
So I was on the highway the other day, going FAST, and noticed that a pair of pigeons flew very low over the car. Around 15 seconds later I noticed a pair of crows about to fly across the car from left -> right. I briefly thought, "Shit they aren't gonna make it" and then it happened...BANG!!!!! One of them hit the very top of the windscreen exactly at the seal between the screen and the roof. It made the most sickeningly loud bang.
I pulled over and checked for damage. None, thankfully. I never knew you could hit a bird in flight with a car. Never had that happen before. I thought the aerodynamics would prevent that, and that made me wonder...do you guys think the air vent on the left of the bonnet could have been part of the reason? Thoughts? I've hit a few birds at high speeds too....never any real damn, except to the bird of course!
I doubt the air vent has anything to do with it.

normal aerodynamics won't prevent a collision with a bird. The density of the air moving over your vehicle is not greater than the object's desire to fill that same space.
Did the bird make it? |

oh , I don't think the vent had to do with anything. You probably just didn't hit the bird hard enough or you clipped the birds whole wing.
Hey, this it what happens when you hit a bird at over 100 mph. I can't seem to get the video to post on here but here's the link...

Looked in the rear-view mirror, didn't see it fall, but I can't imagine it making-it after being hit at that speed and after the sound it made (even though it probably JUST clipped the top edge of the windscreen).

Here's what happens when a chicken tries to cross the road in front of a car going 160mph.

I hit a bird while driving on the freeway in Oklahoma. All I heard was a big thump hitting the top left corner of the windshield. I didn't know what it was. My wife was driving behind me and she said all she saw was a cloud of feathers coming from my car.

I was in london a few years back when I was on vacation. The the suite I booked was occupied so I was down graded to a smaller suite. So long story sort, the hotel provided me with a brand new rolls royce phantom and a driver for the duration of my stay as compensation. When I was on the M25... doin abt 150... a bird planted itself inside the grill. It went through the radiator... I guess that's like 20K worth of damage right there! hahaha.

A long time ago when I was still on my permit... I was driving on the highway and 2 small birds (maybe sparrows) flying in line swooped down in front of the car. I heard a thud and only one bird escaped. From my dad in the passenger seat: "Well I guess that one isn't getting lucky tonight."
My other encounter was with a pigeon poking around on an on-ramp. It took off too late and hit my bumper. It was pretty funny to see an explosion of feathers come up over the hood. I guess I should feel somewhat bad that I killed the thing... whatever, it's a rat with wings. |

I've hit a bird.........or rather, had a bird hit me while riding my GSXR. It felt like somebody punched my right shoulder. Luckily for the bird, it was able to fly away since it only hit a 180 lb. human moving at about 30-40 mph. It might not have been so lucky had I been driving.
It's weird though..... ...when riding, even bugs (..especially bees) create a noticeable thump when I hit them. Leather has saved my ass from stings on a number of occasions. |

If you'll look under his name on the left of the OP you'll see he's in India.

Guys,
A few months ago I had received this one (is it off-topic since it is not a bird?!?!?). I know, disgusting, isn't it? Anyhow, at that time they mentioned that the bimmer was traveling at a speed of ~140MPH / 230 km/h when it hit this fox. I am not sure 100% about this speed though as it sounds a little high, but if you think that the crow hitting a car made some noise... imagine here???? I sure hope not to hit one of the many deer or other wild animal that live in the tri-state area!
