No oem alarm for 09?

Hi all,

In the process of ordering a 09 sedan. Was trying to get the dealer to throw in alarm as part of the deal, but he says as of right now the oem alarm is not compatible with the 09 software. So it won't be available for a few months. Is that true? Tks

Depends on how much the dealer tries to gouge you. I paid $600. That was about $300 for the parts and 2.5 hours labor which is not bad. Others here said that their dealers have tried to charge over $1000 for the alarm installed. If you have a cool dealer, they might let you do the hardware install yourself and you could bring it in just for the programming part of it which would save you some money. I know some dealers are selling the parts for around $250 so that plus you doing the install yourself plus maybe another $100-$200 for programming could came out significantly cheaper than what I paid. Like I said, it all depends on the dealer.

Recommend you find a different dealer as this CA doesn't know the facts or is just too cheap to include the alarm in your deal. BTW, OEM Alarm should cost ~$300-350, then 1-1.5 hours of installation labor

What's the difference between the aftermarket and OEM factory alarm that comes on most vehicles? Does the M not come with a factory alarm? I'm assuming the aftermarket has shock sensor, etc?

No factory alarm. It didn't come with it on the E46 either
I really wonder why they do this. It's like 80-90% of cars today have alarms its a given

But I think of all the little things here and there on the car this should at least be one of the standard items

This must be a US only thing. All European M3’s since the E36 have come with the OEM alarm fitted standard. It seems that there are a few things that the US M3 doesn’t get as standard that the European ones do. Guess that’s why the US base price looks so good at first glance until you spec it up to the European base spec!

Why would anyone want a car, in the price bracket of the M3, without an alarm!!!! What are BMW thinking!

So you just cant buy the Alarm anymore? Why would they discontinue it? or did they come out wit a replacement part?

I think BMW gets away with it. They know tons of people just assume it has an alarm as it beeps locks flashes lights etc.
But when a customer finds out and comes back to ask why the car doesn't have an alarm and they tell you something like, "Oh I thought you knew."
Well in reality nobody really ever asks so they have no reason to tell you. We just hope and assume it's standard equipment

So not even if the door is opened up (for instance, lock your door-which usually arms factory alarms-blinking red light.) Then open the door from inside or through an open window...no honking? That's not possible! Seriously, my 99 chrslyer had it. Haha. Seriously, no factory...basic alarm (horn)?!

Looks like I'll be buying my alarm TODAY and gettin this mofo installed. Cannot see the business sense in not offering any OEM alarm.

Am I missing something??

The OEM alarm is insanely easy to install. But my car just doesn't have one.
They're not stock which really sucks. So in iDrive we could just change the settings for the Blink and flash that's it.
I don't even get an audible signal

You can't open from inside when locked tho. Try locking someone in your car and see if they could get out. Trapped! haha

The audible signal comes from the interior motion sensor in the rear dome lights. No IMS = No audible lock signal
