BMW X4?

what do you guys think? Personally, I would never get one, it just doesn't represent BMW at all.

Not a fan. I've never been a fan of the X-Series either, though, so YMMV as they say.

The spy shots make it look a little goofy, although the rendered image looks much better. The flared 3 with big rims/tires kinda reminds me of the look you see sometimes on the street--the old Caddy (Olds, whatever, usually a big American boat) with HUGE, and I mean impossibly huge, rims. Like 22's? They look all jacked up because of the massive rims/tires, which increase the ground clearance substantially.

I guess its better than another SUV, in any case. We certainly don't need more of those.

Forgive me Irv... I like the idea of it...that is, more car-like and less SUV-like.
Plus it begins to carve out another niche for BMW's influence.
I'm not an SUV person but I do like this car and the upcoming X6.

It reminds me of a Dodge Magnum. Interesting, but not my cup of tea.

Jim, I respect your opinion

It just doesn't cut it for me, maybe the X6, cause it looks more like a crossover, but the X4, like someone else mentioned, it looks more like a touring.

But, from what I learned in the past, never judge the first spy photos, they can be deceiving.

I read an interesting story from EniLab over on GCZ.
He said that the introduction of the Mercedes CLS caused Suzanne Klatten to go into full ape-shit mode at a BMW board meeting.
Mercedes had beaten BMW to the punch with a "4-door luxury coupe" (yes, a contradiction in terms).
Not only did Mercedes bring something to market before BMW...it wasn't even on their drawing boards.
It put BMW into a "me-too" position if they chose to introduce a comparable model.

The board's critique was that Bangle and Co. do a fantastic job designing cars but their weakness is in not anticipating new modes-
new types of cars that are applicable to the market range of BMW. Thus, the X6, and apparently an X4.
Whether the story is true, or , more likely, partly true, it underscores how competetive the German brands are with one another
merely by the creedence given in its retelling as BMW/Mercedes lore.

The X4 isn't my cup of tea either- but I like that BMW is getting jiggy inside the market and definitely
taking a chance on a niche that may or may not be there for them despite the success of the Infiniti F35/45.
And, I secretly dig the beastiness of the X6.

I think that Klatten's alledged reaction also goes to hilite the care and massaging that has gone into the 1-er coupe.
To me, this is their true-to-the-roots model introduction that encapsulates BMW's aesthetic.

Perhaps the trending shows Audi Allroad-like modes of transportation will take over as SUV sales slide. I guess that's what this model is set to attack. It could do well, especially if BMW starts bringing in nice diesels. People are becoming more interested in fuel economy.

Maybe station wagons will come back "in" -- that would be great, IMO.

100% agree with your comments.
Aside from the obvious things an SUV does well the perception in the marketplace is about safety, and as an emblem of masculinity.

Maybe the mistake was to take it too far...towards a one-dimensional version of masculine that overlooked among other things mainstream technological innovation and at least a passing concern with operational costs and its effect on the environment.
Switching opinion over to crossover vehicles, I think, hinges on extending the image to sporty, muscular, and adaptive which is do-able for BMW.

some new-ish camo pics.

You Tube..An X6 mule on the road. Check out the acceleration as it pulls into traffic.

That's not what the X4 is going to look like. That's just an E91 body on a test mule frame.

I actually like the concept of a BMW version of what the rest of the world calls a "crossover".

Probably to test it for a new X3.

The body is from an E91.

BMW X6 photoshop from AutoZeitung. It's a new Boundary Creature that EniLab (GCZ) says is 99% accurate.
It's too big, it's definitely not green, and exactly what the world doesn't need...
but I LOVE IT!

I agree wholeheartedly except for your last statement.

I spent a few years daily driving Land Rovers. I'm an offroader, so I used 'em... But I felt so guilty shuttling around all their weight, and wasting all that petrol. I'm going back to my roots, with small, light(ish), and "just right."

I know ... and I (honest) feel irresponsible.
But I do love this beast...have been following it thru development.
Appeals to the raw beef/turquoise jewelry/hairy-chest side of my brain.

I was just going to say that this same spy pic has been used in other articles describing it as an X3 test mule.

I'm diggin it too Jim! Hearing Klatten going apeshit just made me burst out in laughter...lol But mercedes was on the mark with the CLS. Its soo damn sexy. My dad wanted to buy one but my mother hated the smallish rearward view when driving and thought it was ugly. Boy was I dissapointed. They got the bread and butter E instead. :iono:

They just transplanted the front of an E90. Glad it's just a test mule.

You're Gonna Love/Hate This....

More spy pics popping up of the X6 - Just to repeat, next year
the new 1-er coupe, the (stunning) new Z4, and the new X6 will be on BMW showroom floors. I think it'll be license to print money for BMW dealers.
X6- Grotesque, belligerent, selfish, AWESOME!
