Anyone ever have their audio cut out for like 3-5 seconds and come right back?

I have an 09 M3 with Enhanced Premium Audio and this has happened to me about 5-6 times in the 6 months....I'll be playing my ipod (through the 6FL Cable) and all of a sudden the sound lowers to none at all and then comes right back about 3-5 seconds later. It did it today on the drive to work but this time the sound didnt come back it showed the Mute icon on the idrive screen after about 5 seconds so i clicked the volume knob and it came back on....very strange....

Happens about once or twice a day to me. Audio cuts out, then comes back. I have 2010 M3 with the Enhanced Premium Sound System.

Have you gotten with the dealer about it? Any clue what's causing it?

I'd try putting some songs on a USB drive and playing those and seeing if that helps
If it doesn't do it with USB, it might be something with iPod

I haven't. My 2013 Mercedes does it as well. I've used 2 different iPods, in both vehicles...same thing. It is annoying, I'm wondering if it's their proprietary cable that's being used. Maybe one of the pins become disconnected briefly while driving? I'll start paying attention to see if it happens when either car jostles a little.

My other thought is that there's a cache buffer that loads x amount of data from the iPod, versus loading all items. There may be a quick "dump-reload" process that occurs for data intergrity purposes; which causes a brief interrupt in data being transferred.

There was a service bulletin on this a few years ago. The early enhanced premium sound amplifiers (in the trunk) overheat due to lack of cooling fans. The amplifier in my '08 was replaced under warranty.

Hmmmm. It hasn't ever happened when I'm listening to my satellite radio, which I would think it would. But now I'm more focused on it and will see if it happens with other audio signals.

I'm having this issue right now, 100 miles outside of warranty. The dealer just called me back and told me BMW requires them to do a software update ($273) which could fix it, but may not. If it doesn't, any hardware issues would be extra.

I wasn't happy with that answer, figured I'd do some research first.

You should ask for a goodwill repair. Especially since you are so close to being out of warranty and there's no guarantee that the sw update will fix it.
