The GT-R starts at $94-$96k which is already 991 territory.

True, but the GTR is fully loaded. You have to add 20k worth of stuff on the 991 to equal it.

But it's a Nissan, a well-performing one but.... It should be fully-loaded at that price.

Where are you headed and I hope you have the front end protected...

From what I've heard the GT-R is a great road trip car, stiff suspension and smooth highways. How many miles per tank do you typically get?

front end is clear bra'd so i should be all set.

driving from SC to Ohio for my bachelor party weekend. Should be a good time

honestly I have absolutely no idea what to expect for gas mileage this trip. Im on 1150cc injectors, dual fuel pumps and a fresh tune so I will probably get pretty shitty mileage.

The GTR is an awesome roadtrip car. Ive put 13k miles on mine in less than a year

downpipe / midpipe / exhaust / Cobb = $5k = 560whp
if said person took the cost diff and had say HPF work it over, were would the M3 fall then?

Why not to have both? Buy a GTR when you can afford everything lated to this car.
Remember BMW is a BMW where Nissan could never reach.

The one reason I'd keep an M3 over a GTR is because of the people who drive them. My car is 8 years old, and still to this day - I get nods and peace signs from fellow M3 drivers, regardless of whether or not it's the same model or year. I get the feeling you're a bit of a loner in the GTR, and won't have that sense of comradery.

Another reason would be the constant negative attention you get. One day, you're gonna find yourself on the side of a road because a fart can equipped Honda Civic thought he could out-maneuver you, and instead he just smashes your front end.

You do realize what most people think of BMW drivers, right?

not really.. just did my own transmission, engine and diff oil changes though.. took me a day (but I worked through it slow) and it wasn't too hard!

I'm heading down to the ridge on Friday for the turn2 trackday!

I know I'm reviving a super old thread, but why did you sell your gt-r and get back into an m3?? Just curious because I'm thinking about getting a '11 gtr

Well I would say go for it... both are great cars. The m3 just fit me better mainly because I want to track 1-2 times a month year around.

Older GTRs tend to overheat their transmissions quickly (8-10 laps) and require tranny cooling upgrades, also the tranny has a history of blowing up when under stress (go see how many gtrs have tranny failures over on gtrlife.com) and I was constantly worrying about warranty.

Also tires and pads are slightly more expensive, the stock rotors will crack after 2-3 trackdays so you need to upgrade those..

most importantly, the gtr has such high limits that as a low-med intermediate track driver like me, I could never find them.... with my m3, I can get closer to those limits thus making me a better driver.

However on the other hand, the gtr is a monster, a sledge hammer.. you will easily do lap times with a gtr that are just not possible with most other cars..

ultimately the gtr is a fantastic car... especially if you do more street than track , or are an exceptional track driver who already has all the skills to master a beast like the gtr and is willing to spend a bit more on track wear and tear items.

just make sure you get a good clean gtr and that the warranty in intact..

w00tw00ts experience reminds me of that J.Clarkson DVD "Powered Up" from 2011 where he tested the GTR, the GT2 RS and all the other supercars from that year. And he ended up saying that the BMW 1M was the most fun car to drive.

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzIyNjk3NjIw.html

So interestingly, according to JC, if you mess up the weight distribution (like with the GT3) or go from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive (many supercars now have AWD), no extra hp seems to be able to give you back the amount fun you have already lost. You are just paying more for it in terms of maintenance, insurance, fuel, worries etc. I think it is fair to say that if you cannot take your car to the edge, and control its over- and understeer, then its just a "drag car" waiting to get beaten... Because there will always be something faster out there...
This of course depends entirely on the driver, and JC is not a race car driver.
