Michelin PSS Review
Folks,
I finally replaced all 4 PS2 (OEM specs) tires on my stock 220M's with PSS equivalents. I left the stock sizes in place due to all the talk about rubbing up front if I go any wider. I have to say, that there are a few things that caught be by surprise right off the bat. 1) The grooves in the 265 rears are ridiculously wide. Seriously looks like (3) 1/2" grooves on the tires. I would think that having more rubber would help the contact patch and thus increase traction. Amazingly, the grip is better than the PS2's they replaced. 2) The comfort i feel in the car with the new set of tires is dramatically different. I say dramatic, because I actually can feel a noticeable difference in ride comfort. It is like the car is riding on extra rubber bushings, travels over pavement imperfections better and quieter, and for me improved the comfort of driving. 3) The tires are significantly more 'grabby'. The steering is more sensitive to even the slightest input and the car responds. I have never experienced such a change in feeling from one tire type/brand to the next, and I have had (4) M3's, and tried tires from Bridgestone, Yokohama, Continental and of course Michelin. The fact that the tires are cheaper than the PS2's they replaced, makes it all the more of a no brainer to go with these when it comes time for a tire change. Additionally, It rained and is raining here in the Bay area today, and while I haven't pushed the car too hard, I can tell you that the grip in the wet, is probably the best of any tire I have ever tried. Bravo Michelin! Great tire, and I am sure nobody here will be disappointed in this tire choice on their E9X M3. My hope is that the wear rating holds true and I get some great miles out of these bad boys. Thanks for reading! |

At least I've come to an internet consensus that the PSS is one of the best all around DD summer/light track tires out there. But the sizing issue is driving me crazy. From what I've read, the 359M wheels on my ZCP stick out farther than the 220M's. Some people say going wider rubs on the stock 359 wheel, some don't. Some say wider rubs with 220M, some don't. I want more traction from my 99% street driven M3 if available. I was planning on the 255F/275R combo but now I'm not sure. Again. Are people changing spacers or is it suspension changes that induce the variability? Is there something I'm missing as to why there is no solid answer as to whether or not they'll rub?? |

For a street car, the PSS are great. Take them to an autocross or track, and the outside shoulders get chewed up and the tread compound melts... it's not very good. But it is head and shoulders better than the PS2 it replaces. I am waiting to get better rubber after my PSS wear out.
