Downshift Backfire!! after chip mod....

A friend of mine works at a European chip chuning branch.

He gave me a call lastnight....he just received the "motorsport' engine program for my E92 M3.

Now the car backfires on downshifts!!

Fuck! You can really hear explosions in the airbox.!
I have to check the airfilter...maybe it blew off?

Actually i think it's cool!

Anybody else have the same?

I wouldn't be too concerned.

My car has had this issue from basically day one.

It does not happen all the time, but I have experienced it since I got the car.

I had the DCT update (31.1) installed and it still did it. I had update 31.2 installed, and it still does it.

I am not overly concerned about it, but will continue to report it. Problem is, it is intermitent and follows no pattern that I can discern. So, it is difficult to have a tech replicate.

As far as frequency, I would say it happens here and there. Maybe in 2-3% of all downshifts...that is just a shot in the dark.....but prolly pretty close.

If you figure out the cause, please share. I will do the same.

How frequently does yours have the intake backfire?

edit: Seems like my car has, or has had, nearly all the issues people are reporting. Update 31.2 solved MOST of them. I think as they fine-tune the software, it will only get better. I plan to continue to report this issue until it gets sorted out.

Backfiring thru your exhaust is ok, backfiring thru your intake/air filter is a NO GO!!

The intake plenum is plastic

look at what happens to cast aluminum intake plenums when you get a back fire!!

Pic of my intake plenum on my 350z after a nasty back fire...

It will fcuk your hood up too

Yes be concern if you hear backfire up front by the intake / filter area

Just dug this thread up because I had the same issue. It's maybe happened 3 times total in about 10k miles. Today on my way home however it happened about 6 times within 45min-1hr. I can't figure out how to replicate it though. Anyone figure anything out about this?

Actually sometimes I do and I know it's normal. Like my neck cracking or my ears popping in an airplane

Cars are mechanical, so sometimes popping sounds are normal. Maybe that nice wonderful 4-5krpm intake sound the macht schnell filter gives isn't normal! Or the mechanical whirring sound when slowly turning at full lock isn't! OH NOES!

You can't be too detailed to the sounds of the car and since its so rare, and the car does have its own unusual characteristics I wanted to check.

Do you have any information on why this sound is not normal?

Old thread, but mine pops when I lift off (like every single time) in the exhaust.
And especially during cold starts.

I love it but no one elses seem to do it?
Pops like mad when I lift off with my modded x-pipe/backbox.

Mine pops too. Especially when I'm on it and go for a shift. Love it!

Glad mine isn't the only one!
I love it and my mates ('09 DCT) doesn't do it at all and his exhaust is straight as a don't know what, modded OEM back box, zero cats or resonators. But doesn't pop at all.

Yeah intake backfires can blow the hood off cars basically. You see it on the start line of drag races from time to time. Tune it rich and shoot flames on downshifts.

Was paying more attention to it today. Mine usually does it from 1-2nd, and 2nd to 3rd shift. Scared someone on the sidewalk today doing that

Hahaha yeah quite funny. Use to be super loud with my backbox mod / x-pipe.
But got a new exhaust now so its sounds a little bit mellower. Video soon
