I have a friend that did invest $100k in ford at an average of $4/share. He rode it all the way down to under $2, and is still holding onto it today. Needless to say, hes rather happy with the play.

However, I don't think that "Peak Gold" is responsible for driving up the price...yet. It's not the supply, because there has been a commesurate drop in demand (approx 30% last year, World Gold Council). And investment demand isn't climbing, either, despite central bank buying, speculators and the establishment of new gold ETF's. Speculation is overbalanced to the long side and it's all paper-gold buying; a situation that has the potential to correct violently and quickly (short-term, hence DZZ). An asset can detach itself from its fundamentals for so long, I think. Pretty soon the psychos (speculators) want out of the insane asylum.
Spot on.

Quote:
Perhaps the speculators, being so close to the problems with the financial system at the "too big to fail" financial firms, understand what is coming (multiple sovereign debt defaults including the US, currencies dropping) and are piling on like no tomorrow. Who knows.
If a large financial firm fails, the most immediate effect is deflation. To benefit from that you want to be in cash. Gold won't do anything. If BAC fails tomorrow and helicopter ben announces that he's literally going to drop cash all over the U.S. the immediate effect will still be deflationary because of short term liquidity needs of various investors.

I have a lot of stock strategies that would do well on failblog but I did plonk down about $30K on Apple stock when it was around $30 three or four years ago. I've bought more since all the way up to about 180 which was my last purchase.

It closed around $222 on Friday.

That's one of my few success stories but it will help me retire in my 50s.

I give credit to anybody who invested in apple. I hate apple. I honestly thought they'd be a massive fail. They're working on it though. Its inevitable. I mean shit, they just made a double sized iphone without a phone.

+1, I had a good run with visa. I ended up having it called away from me at an effective price of ~$100

It's not how much one invests though... It's how it's invested.

P. S. I'm loving the buffet quotes
Yea, I went conservative with some of the some of it and aggressive with others, my age (27) helps with that.

Thanks for the advice on the trading sites!

Sure, Buffet has acquired it this year, so it'll be good for at least 5 more. Good earnings, prospects, and a dividend. Just invest and forget it for awhile.

Scottrade ftw!

Anyway (and this isn't directed at you or anyone else) I love how some people say "Yeah, I bought my 335i/M3/house/wife by daytrading" and then you ask them what they're currently invested in and they're like "Oh, um, well..."

I have very little idea what I'm doing, but my success story was investing in SPNG at $.04 and selling at $.18 (those figures may be off - they're from memory).

I wont say any amount of money cause I dont feel like being confrontational. I sold Just about everything I had back in January 2009, 2 houses and 3 cars. Bought a lot of Las Vegas Sands, Bank of Ireland and Dendreon. Recently been selling off portions.

Now building a new house in New Port and that is why all my new cars are 2009 models. Ive been trying to get some employees to invest and they never bought any stocks when I said "hey buy some of this or that."

I've been satisfied with them. Their customer service has always been good to me - both branch office and call center.
