I was planning for over a year to jump into an E90 M3. After I drove the 6.2 liter monster from AMG I couldn't resist the immense torque for every day driving.
I ended up with a C63, simply because I wanted one the last big V8's. The engine is like no other. I love the E90 M3 to death, but Im no track rat, nor do I pretend to be. The C63 IMHO was the better street car. The M3 is the better all around car. The way I looked at it. Styling gets dated (to a degree) . Features get dated. But power never does.

I also agree with Gearhead999s and Jaypod with respect to the F-type. It's a pretty cool car and IMHO it's got the best sounding exhaust on a car out of the box today either in V6 or V8 form! I would take an F-type R coupe (heard they're coming in a year) over a Z06 or an M4. May not be the best track car, but i'm sure i'd smile every time I hit the gas pedal. |

Being 150lbs lighter and having 80+ more pounds of torque will make it quicker for sure.I cannot imagine it to be worse trackday performer than the E9x M3.

I can, quite easily. The E9x M3 got heat soaked pretty easily. I remember almost everyone with an M3 at the Glen in June got a reduced redline cause of heat. The turbo is just going to make that problem worse. Not anything that couldn't be taken care of by an aftermarket intercooler, but the same applies to the 435M too.

Might be related to DCT equipped cars. I think the new M3/M4 is going to be a great car, but we will see. The new M5 is a bit boring though, I drove one a few weeks back, its crazy fast, but lacked character.

The new Amg's will probably have the new 5.5 TT motor. If that's the case. Even in the new gen the M3 will be out-displaced. I'm guessing their will still be a noticeable torque difference between the AMG and the M.
Plus the option of the 4matic. Next gens will be extremely closely matched. I'm excited to see what's to come. But, none of them will have the roar of the mighty V8

There has not been a proper drivers M5 since the E39.The e60 M5's were not a great car to flog around especially with the SMG.

My M3 will have a permanent place in my garage. Is it down on power? yes but with some mods its fine even in DD mode. I seriously considered a C63 as well, but I absolutely hated the little things. I couldn't get a 2 door without waiting 4 months (ridiculous!) Problem is, torque alone doesn't make for a daily driver. It was way more expensive, I hated the interior & the infotainment system (its worse than BMW!). The power and brakes were awesome though. And dat sound, AMG really knows who to make an engine! You'd be paying through the nose in gas. Maybe the new TT would be different.
My next car is probably going to be a 20XX 911 or a range rover for winter/offroading. The number of times I'd actually use the RR properly means I'll probably get a 911. I'm fine with my M3 even in the winter. I love having one of the last great V8s and I love the styling of the E9X. The new ones look horrible and I'd cringe every time I got into one. I agree the M brand is diluted these days.

I wanted to ditch the M3 in the summer (not enough room in the back seat for the kids, bad fuel economy, minor warranty problems) so I went and test drove an S6. It was good, but not good enough to convince me so I decided to stick with the M3, at least until I can test drive the new M3.

I am keeping the M3, it is paid for and will be my long term DD. I have been on the waiting list for the new GT3 since June but still don't have a build date. It it pretty well documented that 991 GT3s are production delayed so we shall see. I rented a 2011 GTR on a recent trip to the Nurburgring and loved the car going to drive a new one tomorrow. Other options for me include the new C7, a used 5.2 R8 or 997.2 GT3.

I am late to this thread but I wasted this whole morning looking for what I would like to have as my next car. I visited a Porsche dealer yesterday and that got me thinking. The most obvious choice for M3 owners historically has been to go with Porsche as their next car - please correct me if I am wrong. In my case, you see, I am truly in love with my M3 and will be keeping it at least until the warranty is up and I am not quite convinced I want to go with Porsche. I would ideally like a GT3 however, $ also has to come into the equation. Anyways, long story short, a bunch of research from this morning has me excited about the new MB C63 AMG with the biturbo V8 which should come out 2015-2016...perfect timing for the switch allowing me more than ample time to extract the optimal amount of joy the M3 has to offer. Anybody else thinking of the new C63? BTW, think it will be called C55 or something like that...
