235/40-18 on 9.5" wheels

Got Dunlops for winter and they look very streyched on stock 18 inch wheels. Installer says 245 would not make much difference and it would require sending back all four tires as 245's are a different speed rating than current front tires and he says it's not "legal" for him to install different front and rear speed rated tires. Are the 235's safe on the stock 9.5 wheels? they look real stupid.

For most tires, a 245 is the narrow recommended limit for a 9.5. I can't imagine how stretched that must look.

I run 255/40 and 235/40 for snows on the stock 18s and they look fine. I run stock 265/40 and 245/40 on aftermarket 18 x 9.5 and 10.5 and they look a little more pinched than I would like, but are OK until I need new tires. 235/40 on 9.5 would be too pinched for my tastes. Some people like that look, but not me. I prefer 255/40 to 265/40 for 9.5.

I'm running 235's on an 8inch rim. So damn your set-up must be super stretched, give Ben@TireRack a call and I'm sure he'll give you all the info you need.
