What are your thoughts?
So I have been doing a lot of thinking and I am debating selling my E90 M3 with only 22,500 miles on it to get into a 2017 X5M.
The reason is I want to get down to just one nice car because I am moving into an apartment more than likely that I only will have one spot at. I want a car that I can drive everyday, rain, shine or snow that I don't have to worry so much about and I will just throw the ZHP in storage. I just don't ever drive my M3 because I look at it as more of an investment. The other option is me adding a 3rd cheaper vehicle but I really really don't want 3 cars especially at this stage of my life. Please give me your thoughts!

I don't think it's out of the question at all. Downsizing to one car in an apartment is wise. However, make sure that buying the X5M is a better decision than selling the E90. Are you over the E90? If so and financially stable to buy the X5M, go for it.

I had a brand new SUV BMW loaner and I absolutely hated it. Those things have very high center of gravity and feel like an ostrich or turkey on the road. It is facetious in the way it drives and requires mid turn corrections, and the turd-bo engines makes it completely non-linear. It lacks composure and you will not have peace of mind driving this it is always under or over doing what you want. I ended up not driving it and preferring my old accord a thousand times and couldn't wait to return that thing to the dealer. This was a positive experience in that it renewed my appreciation of my old naturally aspirated accord and i know i will never buy an SUV. Make sure you drive one for a few days before buying or you will regret. |

How is your commute? If the roads are good then drive the M3 everyday. Financially you will be ahead of the game for sure because an X5M is more expensive and will depreciate faster.

Looks like you're not an SUV guy. Driving styles differ from person to person. It's nice every once in awhile to be able to kick back and just drive, but still retain some level to fanciness or sportiness. It's not for everyone, but they make them for a reason. |

Having a nice sports car and not driving it to keep the miles down on your investment is like having a super model girlfriend and not touching her so she is nice and fresh for the next guy! Get that thing out and enjoy it. Cars are a depreciating asset, therefore a crap financial investment. The only reason to have an nice expensive sports car is to enjoy driving it...

If you don't drive it, sell it and let someone else use it and enjoy it the way it was meant to be.

I just commute across both cities and I don't want it getting trashed. I drove a 2015 X5 M today with every option I want and in the exact color with only 6300 miles today and I think I am going to pull the trigger tomorrow.
I love everything about my E90 I just can justify having it sit. I'll get another one someday if I do go through with it.

I don't really get it at all. You see the M3 as an investment and too nice to rack up miles on. So you want to sell that investment and replace it with a car that's even newer/"nicer" and which will depreciate a TON faster, yet is less fun and only modestly more comfortable, practical, or efficient?

cars at this level are a depreciating asset, not an investment. maybe if you have a crt...
it blows my mind when people buy a car like a m3 and deprive themselves of the joy of driving it. i personally wouldn't want to park a nice car in an apartment complex every night where you might get a spot next to some careless slob that bangs their door on your car.

While the E9X is special, so is the new X5M, don't get that mixed up! Maybe OP is looking for a change of pace while still keeping it luxurious and fast. Remember guys, priorities change! Maybe OP hasn't realized it...

To each his own, but to me vehicles like the X5M make no sense at all. They look like SUVs but are practically worthless off of paved surfaces. They are as large as the M5 in every dimension (except height, where they are taller), yet offer really no additional passenger space or luggage space. They offer tremendous performance that you can't use because the height of the package puts the center of gravity much higher than it is in the M5, making handling far less precise.

I'm 6'5. I want AWD. I want cargo room for the dog. I want something I can park in the street and not be worried about some jackass running into. I want a long term vehicle that I can just not worry about that will retain some value which it will over a non-m. I also want something the girlfriend can drive and I don't have to worry about it.
The E90 is just too nice. Maybe it's not an investment like a collector car but they sure as shit are extremely desirable and maintaining their value. I might just throw the M3 and ZHP in storage for the time I am living in the apartment. I am just mostly tossing around the idea of selling the M3 vs. keeping it. My mind is 99.9% made up on purchasing an X5 M

Buying a '17 X5M is going to be a depreciation nightmare. If you think of your M3 as an investment car (it's not), then you will cry at how much you lose on a new X5M.
If you don't want to worry about leaving it on the street, I'd recommend something like a '14/15 X5 V8. Power, lower cost to purchase and to lose over time, and even less to worry about when someone else drives it or when you park it.

Forget about the investment. Drive the car or sell it and buy something you will drive. I drive my E90M3 year round in NH, but I bought it because I liked the way it drove, not the way it looked in a storage shed. I like the X5M. It would be fun, fast, comfortable, practical. Autos go great with turbos. Seamless power.
