What's the sudden obsession with "drifting" all about?

I don't see F1 or NASCAR drifting all over the place. At least not on purpose lol.

Go carts, that weird Australian racing on ESPN 9, that awful Fast and Furious movie and Japanese street racing crap - there I see lots of drifting.

Is this drifting craze because of that stupid Top Gear show or something?

Drifting's original purpose was to take a corner maintaining high speed so you can exit at a high speed so technically faster lap times because you dont need to slow down into a turn and accelerate out of it.

to my understanding nascar is just a giant oval track so there isnt a need for drifting becasue there are no real corners.

F1 doesnt need to drift because their traction and acceleration is so fast theres just no real need to drift a corner

Don't see it as a craze as its a decade+ old over here and goes back further in Japan.

Drifting is not about speed since sideways isnt the fastest way around.

Its a scored event almost like figure skating.

.... WHAT?!

HOW CAN YOU BE HERE AND NOT LIKE TOP GEAR. HEATHEN

On topic:

There hasn't been a "sudden obsession with drifting". Maybe you just recently noticed/discovered it, but it's been around for forever. Hell, rallying has always involved drifting/sliding around gravely bends.

American movie/media makers just decided to throw more of it into their films because lets be honest, seeing a car go sideways is more exciting than seeing it go straight... go straight... go straight... turn slight left... go straight...

No drifting is just a fun way of driving and it's been in racing since the 1930's when Gran Prix drivers used it in turns. Rally Car drivers use the techniques of drifting more so then other types of racing. F1 or NASCAR rarely do any drifting because they are after max grip and following a racing line as fast as possible. Drifting is The idea is being in control but "out of control" at the same time. It's not for everyone but it's a lot of fun.

How old are you?

Drifting was much much bigger about 4 years ago -- I think I can safely say it's completely out of pop culture now, save for those fast & furious films that they won't stop making.

I'm old enough to know that Top Gear has "drifting" contests and they're stupid.

Completely out of pop culture you say?

Please tell me you aren't considering "Top Gear America" as "the" Top Gear.

Top Gear UK, the original, has very little in terms of "drifting". If you've been only watching America version and are judging top gear based on that, please please go watch the original.

1addicts and bimmerpost != pop culture.

Also, there aren't 'drifting contents' on Top Gear'.

Drifting, who doesn't like to drive with the a$$ end out. There's skill and sport for everything... even cup stacking. You should watch superbike racing where they steer the back end into a turn. It's crazy! Also, driving hard out of a turn, they leave these very cool long blackie marks. Love it!

I LOVE watching the US top gear! It's hilarious. So is the UK one as well. The US show where they take soccer mom vans across the continental divide is priceless.

Not only did they very recently have a drifting contest between a BMW and Porsche (you wrote content), they even have an instructional video on how to drift my 1 series. Sorry you were wrong.

Again, this is a sport dating back decades in Japan. I had a roommate in college who semi professionally got into drifting in '04. This is not some kind of new fad or craze. It's also a lot harder than it looks.

Okay, one or two episodes out of literally over 100 does not justify "Is this drifting craze because of that stupid Top Gear show or something?"

Isn't that what Hulk Hogan's son wanted to do professionally years back?

On topic, it's nothing new and was in it's pop culture peak when they did the worst, not even part of the franchise storyline, Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift. I actually had not heard about it in years. Interesting you bring this up.

There is one guy on the US Top Gear (Tanner Faust?) who apparently was/is pro at rally car racing and shows off drifting from time to time, but it isn't all over pop culture in my opinion.

We all are. You've started a thread about something that's so out of left field it makes no logical sense. You might as well complain that these shaggy boys from Liverpool are ruining music.

FWIW Rallycross is starting to gain broader appeal. Ken Block has done a pretty fine job of putting it on the radar.

I'm not trolling lol. I just watched that video you posted and wanted to remark how cool is was. I usually have no patience for that sort of stuff but it was really well done and amazing. All of it! I normally would have stopped watching after 20 or 30 seconds but I watched all 9+ minutes.

Thanks.
