OEM ZCP - 255/275 PSS vs 255/285 Conti 5P

Hopefully not beating a dead horse here, I couldn't find anything specifically about comparing these 2 tires.

Our plan was to buy a new set of PSS tires on Monday but I found that Discount tire direct has $100 off any order over $400 from their eBay store so I could order the Continentals front and rear tires separately and get $200 off total which would make it what and what cost wise with the PSS. (PSS is not on eBay)

I like the look of the cars I've seen with the 285s on the rear but as far as performance, is It really that much over the 275 PSS? Both are great on dry traction but is one better then the other in the rain? I've read the Conti 5P is a OEM tire on some AMG cars so i'd imagine its pretty good all around.

Our car is just street driven, not a daily though. It will be on the track for the first time next month.

So my question is, what would you do?

PSS. Partially because I would want the slightly taller sidewall of the 275/35.

If you're looking to save money, check out the Continental DW in 255/275-35-19.

The Conti DW is a really soft sidewall tire and you lose quite a bit of steering feedback with this tire vs. the PSS or Conti 5P. On the other hand they are very light.

To the OP: It will depend on what tire size you end up wanting to run. I am usually on the other end of Slider (whose opinion I immensely respect) when it comes to this. I prefer a 285/30/19 tire over the 275/35/19, mainly for aesthetics as the performance difference between the two tires will be negligible, especially on the street. Anyone tells you different is just being biased. It would take a race driver running at 9-10 tenths to eek out any difference between these two tires. There have been quite a few tire tests in Europe in which the 5Ps came out on top. Unfortunately on this board if you don't run Mich PSS your car isn't shit. I would compare pics of the two tires on ZCP wheels and see which you like better and go from there. I am very happy with my GTS setup and can't tell you how many posts and PMs I get that tell me that if Mich made a 285/30/19 PSS they would be all over it, and to be honest including myself. Since they don't make them I moved on to a different brand. Never understood why they don't make this size. Its OEM sizes as well for some of the AMG cars.

I've owned both and I was extremely impressed with the Conti 5Ps. If you end up with the Contis, make sure you get the 5Ps where the 285/30/19 is for the rear axle only and with a wear rating of 280.

If you want to see pics of my car with the Conti5Ps in the GTS sizes let me know.

Its not so much looking to save money, it was just a deal on possibly getting the 285 in the rear.

Thanks for your response. If you could post some pics, that would be great.

I guess my only concern is how much smaller is the sidewall on the 285/30 vs the 275/35? I am in New Orleans where the streets are not the best and on the stock 265/35 I already a lot on the road.

Also, I know the PSS is rated as a 30,000 mile tire, how long does the Conti5P last?

Here's a couple of pics..this is with the Toyo T1S I am currently running on my 2013 ZCP car. I found the ToyoT1S to be a pretty good tire as well.

As far as ride quality the larger 275.35.19 will probably give you more of a compliant ride. To be honest though I didn't notice much difference between the GTS setup vs. the OEM setup.
