the best of times, the worst of times

Finally got my M yesterday after the oh so long 2-3 month wait. Dealer drooped her off at my house yesterday afternoon. Went for a quick drive, Quickly figured out that the sound system did not work. Had tremble from the system but no midrange or bass of any kind. Called the dealer said they would look at it next week. Installed some exterior mods. Went for another short drive. Went through the manual and set up the cars settings. Woke up this morning looking forward to a long drive to begin my break in period and reach the magic 1200 miles.

Only problem was the CAR WOULD NOT START! The electronics turned on, started turned but the engine would not fire. Called the dealer who picked up the car on a flat bed.

So the net/net is that the DME control module has some sort of fatal fault. They apparently need to install a new central control module and I will likely not have the car back until the middle of next week at the earliest. So after having the car for less than 24 hours the electronics fail? Spectacular quality control at the BMW factory!

I rated this thread 5 stars so you can feel better man. I'd be pissed too.

For the record I really rated this 5 stars. Then some other jerks did otherwise.

I don't blame you, but be assured this is a rare incident. Not too many stories here of owners being stranded by their cars. Issues, yes, but not total failure.

Sorry to hear that. On another note, beautiful color combo. Lemans is amazing.

It's probably because of the cf mirrors.

Certainly a rare case...the workers on the assembly line start every car and turn on all the electronics to check before it leaves the line. Yours could have had something weird happen in shipment, because there is no way it would have left the factory that way.

question on enhanced premium sound amps.

Thanks for listening to me vent. The lemans blue/bamboo combo is very impressive in person. Happy I went with that combo. I ordered it without ever seeing it in person.

I hope once they fix it I don't have any long term problems. My 335 convertible had problems the day they delivered it also. On that car the right rear window didn't roll up after putting the top down. They fixed it but not a nice first day experience. The electronic systems on these cars sure are fragile. Prior to these cars I have had two infiniti's with the full tech packages and neither one ever had one electrical problem. I love BMW's but when you purchase something this premium there is the expectation that it works.

When my stereo was not working I looked under the cargo floor at the amp section. Since I ordered "enhanced premium sound" I thought there would be some beefy amps. There was only one on the right side, the left space was empty? Would somebody who has the premium sound option either post or PM me a pict of what the amp section should look like or a link to a post with these pictures. It looked to me like I was missing something???

On a final note: waaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Waiting to hear back from the dealer to see how long this fix is going to take them.

The OEM amp is on the left side of the trunk, under the plastic cover (silver box):

Technic, Thanks! So what is the box under the lift up floor of the trunk towards the right side? Is that the computer control module?

Just spoke with the dealer. They said it would be at least a week to get the DME in from Germany. Apparently the module is VIN specific so the factory has to program one for me.

So, BMW sold me a car with toasted computer control module. After having the car for less than 24 hours, it is in the shop for over a week? The quality control is very unimpressive.

Once again thanks to Technic for posting picts of the amp location.

You should be driving an M3 as a loaner for all this trouble...
