Stud Conversion Life

For those of you running stud conversions for your wheels, do you consider this a wear and tear item, or something that can be run permanently? I was thinking of going with studs since I plan to do a lot more track days (at least 12 next year) and was wondering how many track days to expect out of them before they need to be replaced, if at all.

i'll probably replace mine after 2 seasons... i'll replace them sooner if i start to see any deformation or if the treads start to get stripped. whether you go with studs or regular lug bolts, you'll probably follow the same replacement schedule.

i did 13 track days this year. probably bout 8 next year (getting married so cant afford to track so much).

I have 8-10 track days on the M, not sure as I switched cars a couple of times..

how long should the oem ones lsat?

should i just get better replacements or just get another set of OEMs?

I thought the recommendation was the same regardless of studs or bolts: being every season or so if tracked often?

Correct, replace every season if under regular track use.

what do you define as a 'season'?

Cause, the way it's looking, I did 8-10 track days, and, if time money permitting, will do 5+ more in the fall.

So, does a season mean a year, or like, literally, a season, like fall, spring etc.

A year. How many times you install/uninstall the wheels will also play a role in how long they last.

how do you test if they are good? dont want my wheels flying off into the brush but dont want to blindly spend money if its not needed. your not supposed to reuse rubbers or syringes either but hey what the heck!

a season is one year of tracking... if you change wheels and tires often, i guess 1 season should be the recommended life of a stud kit.

i change mine every 2 seasons though. i used the oem ones for 2 seasons and i've used my stud kit for 1 season. so at the end of next year i will change my stud kit out. i havent found any problems with changing it every 2 seasons so i am sticking to this schedule. i know people who NEVER change their studs or bolts throughout the life of the car and havent had issues. i guess it all comes down to the quality of the studs or bolts.

Its a better safe than sorry maintenance item, no defined interval. My bigger concern with studs has been the lack of consistent torque recs from stud manufacturers, whether to use thread locker, etc. Turner seemed to be about the only one with explicit instructions and torque recs. I'll probably swap mine every two years.

I recommend using thread locker on the studs.

Who is the best source for these? What are the specs for the product I'm looking for, or size of the studs? Do they only stick out slightly from the wheel or is it pretty noticeable?

I just installed a Macht Schnell 75mm stud kit on mine. The front stick out a bit, but I think it looks good. Check the close up and far shots. On the rear they barely stick out at all. I think this will also depend on the offset of your wheels, my specs are in my sig.

Go with the studs from Turner.
I think replacing every year is a bit much, but if you see them worn, then replace them. I just follow Turners installation instructions, no issues at all.

+1. I had ordered some MS studs that had some variation in manufacturing and didn't care for the company's casual response (and also an inability to provide torque specs.) Wound up with Turner and very happy.

Exactly. Any manufacturer would probably say something like 'replace as needed'. Whatever you have to do to feel safe out there.

Always inspect the lugs each track day, and if you see anything suspicious, replace. As DeNiro so wisely said in Ronin, "Whenever there's any doubt, there is no doubt"

Being conservative, annual replacement is probably fine for just about anyone. Every couple years probably fine for infrequent track use.

Any advanced testing to find metal fatigue and such would probably cost more than a set of lugs.

I usually replace mine every year or so with average track days. Because I get paranoid at times, I actually always have a couple spare OEM bolts and TMS studs/nuts in my glove box or tool box. Fortunately, it has been about 4 years of running a stud conversion and I have yet to run into any problems. I also put my cars through the winter, so I typically change right after the last snow fall or before my first track day of the season.

so is it a 75mm kit i am after from turner? do they come in different lengths dont really like how far they stick out in the above photo.

You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??"
