A few thoughts on my E93 after 1,500 km
- DCT and drivelogic are very impressive. The gear changes are smooth and quick and to do it all without a clutch pedal is a real bonus. When hitting peak hour suburban traffic being able to put it into auto mode is very handy. Can't see myself ever going back to a 6MT but after driving the DCT I can understand and appreciate why some people like the traditional way.
- Default on start up being D2. Not a fan of this at all. Makes the car feel even heavier than it is and very sluggish. D2 is like driving a Toyota Landcruiser. After a few minutes always have to move it to D4 (which is fine) or into S mode. Any advise on making the car start up on D4? - M button. Love it. Whenever the traffic clears and I can have a crack or I go for a drive out of the city I press this button and it puts you into another world. The changes to the drivelogic, steering, EDC, power etc is very impressive. - The turning circle on the M3 isn't great compared to my other recent cars and this has been noticeable when trying to make sharp turns. - When taking the roof off and driving the car at higher speeds (100-120+km) the car doesn't feel as stable as it should. - Premium audio. A lot better than the stock system and works pretty good with the roof off which is important but it won't blow your mind away. - Sat nav/Idrive. Works pretty good. After seeing Clarkson rip it to shreds in top gear I was expecting the worst. Played around with it for 20 minutes and everything you want to do it with it you can do quite easily. Been used to a tom tom in my other car so this is a lot better. I like the split screen and the Ipod/Cd/radio features are all ok. A big fan of the 8 favourite buttons to make phone calls etc. - Auto engine stop start feature. Talked about this in another thread but basically its a good feature for when you are driving through traffic and stopping regulary at red lights. It's flaw is it doesn't work in S mode but only works in D (auto) mode. - Some may call this minor but for me it is sloppy workmanship by BMW. Underneath the 8 favourite buttons there is another row of 6 buttons. One is used for auto stop/start, the other is to turn on the parking sensors, the other 4 are blank and don't do anything. This shouldn't happen, there should only be 2 buttons showing. It's like walking into your living room and the electrician has put in 6 light switches but only 2 actually work with the other 4 being blank. It just wouldn't happen. The electrician would only put in the 2 switches that are needed and BMW should do the same. - Blue tooth mobile phone connection - Works good and in 2 weeks the line hasn't cut out once. (In my other car the cut out rate is about 50%) so it's definately an improvement. - Hardtop convertible roof. One of the features that swayed me for the E93. Works fine and gives you the best of both worlds. Being able to open it and close it from outside the car with the button on the key is a bonus. Still think BMW can do some more work on it so that it looks a little better visually from the outside with the hinges and lines. All in all quite happy with it. 9/10. With the roof off at higher speeds the car clearly does not drive as smoothly. You can feel it in the steering wheel that the stability isn't 100%, although I wouldn't say it feels unsafe. Just compared to driving at higher speeds with the roof on there is a big difference.
Will bring it up with BMW at my 2000km service next week but from what I have heard thats just how most verts are... |

Congrats on your sweet ride! Try windows up with the top down at speed - smooths the airflow and helps with stability.

With the car run in now with 3500 km done I took it for a nice 4 hour drive today with the roof off in the 30 degree sun and I must say it was quite a lot better and was a joy to drive. Seemed a lot more stable and the steering wheel didn't wobble at all. So very happy with the improvement here.
Also have noticed when driving in M drive how much this car loves being pushed to the 7,000-8,500 rev range on 1st, 2nd and 3rd. You get the feeling the car prefers this rather than changing gears at 5000 revs. Absolutely love it.
