As an aside, I still wonder why Toyo discontinued the RA1 to replace it with the R888 (only to bring back the RA1 after the market pleaded for it)...
It sure seemed like the two tires complemented each other based on size availability. There isn't/wasn't a ton of overlap.

Does the RA1 do well with M3's?

You should probably have them shaved from what I've seen. They start 8/32" and can chunk if abused...plus all the heat you'll transfer into them with tall tread blocks is not optimum. NT01 and be done.

The NT01 is essentially an RA1 for heavier cars.

I used RA1s extensively in the past on my VW GTIs and I loved this tire. To me, the overall feel and general characteristics of the NT01 are quite similar to the RA1 (except that the NT01 is worthless in the wet). The structure of the carcass is stiffer and the thread blocks are bigger on the NT01 to be able to handle more weight.

See link (old Toyo info on the R888):

By the end of 2008, all sizes of RA-1 are expected to be replaced by the R888. "

They worked very well on my 08.They work very well in the wet till they have about 4/32's left.I ran a few sets from full tread depth with no chunking and they are at their best just before they start cording.I used to average 4-6 days on a new set.
