At that pace you'll have to replace rod bearing once a year.

Ha.. Or never, depending. Right?

It's really interesting this rod bearing thing.. I mean being in the Auto Repair and Aftermarket business I get to see hundreds of repair shops every year. Since I got my M I have been asking all my European repair shops if they have been doing Rod Bearings on M3's. Do you know I have yet to find a shop that mentions that they have... Now I am not saying there are some M owners that have not had problems. That is clearly documented... But to what extent is this a real problem for "everyone" I do not know, but based on what I see and hear in the real world.. I would say it is not.

It certainly is in the "internet forum" world for sure.

I don't want to turn this into a rod bearing thread, but that's an interesting perspective, thanks for sharing.

You really do have to wonder - of current M3 owner's, how many are even aware this is an issue? Same question for independent European shops.

The option of 'Neither' would Not provide any form of driving usage. IMO

I agree, but it is more of a preventative measure or for long term ownership and for those who wants the peace of mind when adding superchargers. imo

I drive my M3 just for grins. Occasional track days, but mainly for banzaiing back country lanes on sunny days. I just clicked over 13,000 miles before storing the car for the winter.

I only drive it when the weather is nice. For rain or snow, I got my daily f10.

I am not in Europe, but the member who tracks failures most closely, M3 Belgium, is there and has mentioned failures in Europe and has mentioned the shop he would use if he changed his and has said they have experience changing bearings on these cars. So, despite your experience, I believe there are shops in Europe that change bearings preventatively on these cars. Long ago, one of the theories was that bearing problems were a US problem—maybe due to girl or driving style or climate. That theory got debunked with failure reports from Australia and Europe.

My experience is similar. The service manager at my Penske BMW dealership, a personal friend, told me that his large volume shop has never replaced a set of E9X rod end bearings, E46 M3 motors, yes under the recall, but never the E9X M3's.

I believe the E9X rod bearing paranoia is a form of self perpetuating internet hysteria fueled by the ancestral memory of the very real propensity for E46 M3 rod bearings to fail.

If the S65 engine had rod bearing issues, BMW would launch a recall, just as they did for the E46 M3's S54 motor.

Mine is a fair weather car that gets driven as much as possible. I don't drive it on Mondays or during winter/snow as I have a beater for those days. I have a relatively short commute so I only drive it when I know I will get the engine/DCT up to operating temps. In my first year I put a tick over 3K miles on it and every one has been memorable. I hope to get out to the track/autocross this year.

Everyone is entitle to give suggestions. Criticism is another subject matter, maybe someone else can come up with a poll, this was something to get some insight on current e9x m3 owners. Sorry, if I didn't cover all the options. lol
