Shadowline trim on 2013 E93 M3

Hey guys. I've been reading all the threads on getting the shadowline trim installed on my Alpine White M3. To say I'm bummed out would be an understatement. Fitment issues, scratches/gouges, leaks, etc left me with only 2 alternatives - paint it or vinyl it.

I've used Plastidip and although it's pretty user-friendly I'm not fond of the bumpy texture you're left with. Not bad for wheels or distant pieces, but the trim is going to be in your face every time you enter and leave the car. So vinyl it is, since using any other kind of paint would require masking off the whole car to prevent overspray.

I found a very cool shop in the Phoenix area called The Wrap Shoppe (www.thewrapshoppe.com) that is very familiar with blacking out trim on highline cars. They are going to use 3M vinyl printed in black with a vinyl gloss coat on top. I have an appointment with them in a few days and will report back how it goes!

Here are the before pics...

If you have had similar experience please let me know if there are questions I should be asking or materials I should shy away from.

By the way, the price quoted was $250. Not bad seeing what others have paid. Thanks in advance!

Price isn't bad assuming they use high-quality vinyl, they take their time, and you get a warranty. Makes a huge difference. Glad to see you doing it. I hope you go matte. It will require basically no maintenance.

Hey thank you for the input. I was thinking of going with the shiny finish since it had UV-protection, but the more I think about it the matte finish would match the rest of the car more. Glad you gave your input about the warranty too. I'll be asking about that!

I had mine vinyled with 3M product. I went with gloss black, and I'm glad I did. It doesn't match the sideview mirror housing, but it doesn't look awkward. Great mod which I wish I did from the beginning.

Just got the car back and it turned out really nice. Thanks, tpowerdinny, for the matte black suggestion. Much better than the gloss IMHO.

I also spoke to him about the warranty. Any lifting will be completely repaired. And the material is fade resistant for 2.1 years according to the manufacturer.

C'mon BMW and start offering this on the new models!

Looks great. And glad to know it is fade resistant for 2.1 years because 2 years just isn't enough!

Thanks! And +1 to the extra .1 years of fade resistance. Lord only knows how they decided to round up to 2.1?!

Very nice! Did it myself and its not perfect by any means. But from the pics that really does look perfect. Price seems great too. I paid about 60 for the material and it took me several hours. So 250 doesn't seem bad at all.

Hey local! I'll have to keep an eye out for you. It took him about 2.5 hours. He's on Deer Valley Rd off the 17. Good luck!

When you did it yourself, did you remove the trim or did it while on the car? Looks great!

Looks great, though $250 seems a bit high. Vinyl is $15 and install should be about 3 hours for a newbie. Regardless, looks fantastic!

US Prefers Chrome - Huh? Go to Germany for OEM

Been craving shadow line for my 2012 E93 M3 from before I bought it. Best solution is to have dealer order shadow line from Germany. OEM shadow line package (complete) indeed is available.

DON'T let a dealer service center install. While dealers do great work in servicing Ultimate Driving Machines, a high quality autobody shop should get the nod for this installation. Roof metal is very soft - scars and mars easily. Body shops have "tricks" (tools) that prevent installation damage. AND if they do happen to damage the paint, well, they can put the car back EXACTLY like it was - NEW!

I'll post pics in a couple of weeks after the parts are in and the installation is complete. For now, posting some of the "before" pics.

Obviously the actual trim is best solution but at around $1100 just for the coupe trim most (including me) are not gonna do it.

I've paid some hi prices for oem BMW parts, but just can't bring myself to spend $1100 on the trim for what it is.

Would have no problem paying for it to be professionally wrapped though, to save myself the trouble

Would it work in white???

This looks awesome. I also have an Alpine White E93 - do you think it would look as good doing the trim `in a white wrap? My windows are not as dark as yours... Might get dirty?
