Guys I might sound a bit obsessive but I'm in this break in period and I went over 5000rpms few times for few seconds because you just can't resist that sometimes I guess. I heard things about warranty cancellations and stuff like that might happen when you go for the 1st oil change. What is that all about?

Finished my break-in in 2 days (drove it home from Spartenburg). Repeatedly went over 5k RPM, but didn't hit the limiter, as well as over the speed restriction, and have since put 50k on the odometer as well as around 60 track days and not a hiccup from the car or more importantly, in your case, BMW. It's a car, not a child, have fun with the new whip and don't sweat the small stuff. Have yet to hear of a warranty claim denial from an improper break-in, but am sure there's a first for everything.

I wouldn't sweat an occasional opps. I've accidently gone over 5500 rpm's during break in on a couple of e92's, it's so easy to do. My 1200 mile service was fine on both cars.

You're fine... relax. Loading the motor through the rev range a few times during the break-in period is good for it. Work the gears plentifully as well.

As long as the car was at operating temp you'll be fine.

Coming from the F30 forum I find the m3 forum the funniest and most sarcastic. The problem is sometimes I can't figure out whether you guys are serious or sarcastic.

Your fine! I left the dealership with the car having 0 miles on it telling myself I would be patient...twenty minutes later getting on the highway I couldnt resist redlining it onto the on-ramp. The car is built for it, drive it the way its meant to be driven.

You'll be ok I was in Germany when I got mine autobahn + no speedlimit + fools testing the power of the M = a bit over on rpm and speed and no issues at all. Car has 47k and no problems with her

Granted, apples and oranges... My last motorcycle, bought new was broken in with a good ol' spirited ride through the mountains... Engine being revved from 4K to 15K RPMS, constantly working the transmission through frequent shifting. She ran as good as ever through many trackdays and commutes that followed.

These engines are built to withstand such... as long as you're not abusing it (hitting the rev limiter for an extended period of time, etc...).

Keep up with the maintenance, and enjoy the car man... it's not made of glass!

This may be just hog wash but I thought improper break in would be a factor in the culprit of oil burning in the engine. There was a post not to long ago about people burning oil and somehow it detracted to how people broke in their engines. People who properly broke in their engine seemed less susceptible to the car drinking a QT of oil every 1000 miles or so. Again, this is just an inference with no scientific backing but rather just reading the threads that relate to this and talk on a different forum. I'm sure there are varying reasons why there is a break in period on the engine as well as the clutch and so forth. I know most performance clutches for my old P car had a break in period for it to mate correctly and give it the best possible life/grip.

In my case, I just did my last oil change without a single drop of add-on oil nor a change in the oil meter after driving 4000 miles. Most of which were only spirited drives.

I don't think it should be reasons to void the warranty. I'm sure no one will tell their dealer they have. Just a thought.

I decided to make my break in 1000 miles instead The dealership didn't cause any issues.

I'm not sure about BMW M engines but Porsche tests/dynoes each engine in factory before they get installed in the cars. The break in period is not just for engine but also for transmission, clutch, differential and other components as well.

Have actually heard the opposite and that if not driven hard during break in, pistons don't seal right, you lose more oil. Not saying which is right, just that there are many answers to this question and many threads and I violated my break-in quite a bit and have never had an oil issue.

You're fine. Do lots of stop-go traffic when you can and try to stay away from maintaining a constant engine speed (R.E. - cruising on the freeway at 3K rpm)

You just need to "load" the engine as often as you can - this doesn't, however, mean jamming it to 8K rpm. A little acceleration, staying one gear lower than usual maybe....really depends on how you drive too. When I got my car I did the above process.....occasionally drove it hard, once or 3 times But always had "loading" in mind. This creates the pressure talked about, in previous posts, that will seal the piston rings properly.

They say too that the break-in isn't hinged directly on just the engine. It's all the rubber bushings, suspension, etc. that have to "set" properly....although i don't know how much truth there is to that...

There has been a bit that goes either way. Your vehicle doesn't drink any oil at all? I'm creating somewhat of a spreadsheet as I encounter more people.
