Once you have the black piece on the top right corner out, just remove the 2 terminals from the white connector and pull the white LED board out; that's all you need from the stock knob, so you can destroy the black piece if the wires give you a hard time . And of course mark which wire goes where on the connector, because after fishing the wires thru the modified ZHP knob, you'll have to reinsert them back in the correct position... but push the little tabs out first so they lock firmly in place. Needless to say, you'll need a very small jeweler's (flat) screwdriver for the connector job. Good luck.
PS: If somebody already removed the wires without marking them, just insert the empty connector into the female one on the car and mark them there . Last edited by JCtx; 08-18-2011 at 11:41 PM.. |

Question
1. in the pic that shows where the hole pop up near the 26 did you end up hollowing out that area to place the led light board? or Did you keep it like that and place the led light board right on top and insert the black plastic ring taken out form the OEM? |

Guys I just finished doing mine and it looks GREAT! However, I'm going a different route. I pulled the trigger and bought the BMW performance knob. The only thing I didn't like too much about this one is that the leather doesn't really match the M3 interior. I know this is not a big deal for most but I'm really picky and VERY indecisive.
Anyway, would anyone be interested in buying mine? It has the OEM LED board and OEM 6-speed emblem in the top so it looks OEM. I'll post pics later.

But if you want to sell it, put it on the classifieds and it'd sell in no time. Good luck either way. |

Tried to check out with free shipping on this knob but there are no options for this. Anyone know how to get free shipping?

Just check out as you normally would (as if you were paying shipping). Tischer will remove the shipping charge once the order is processed/shipped.

I finished the mod last night and it went perfect! Thanks for the DIY! It really helped. OH, and having a Dremel tool helped a lot too!

Just did this. Any tips on getting the boot to look "smoother"?
I didn't actually bother with the illumination. Just left the unplugged female side dangling. Doesn't seem to get in the way.. yet.

I'm screwing with this right now and what I am unsure of in the pics through the whole thread is on the ZHP knob I broke them emblem to get it out (no biggie there) but what I was left with was a big black plastic piece that in no way wants to come off. Tried drilling and that did nothing but make holes in it.
Wondering how am I supposed to get it to look like pic 3: |

I dremeled off the black plastic/rubber center until it was flush with the rest of the interior cavity. Epoxied in the black plastic ring and the led board fit perfectly and the shift pattern was perfectly flush with the top of the knob.
