Engine whine
Hey guys!!
well as most of you know, Iam 3 weeks into ownership of my baby. I had the 1200 mile service done last friday and finally was able to work my car out. All I have to say is DAMN!!!!! this car is a beast. The engine sound is a symphany. Well in light of that, I dont know If iam being parnoid b/c of all the threads on transmission noises. Well 3 days ago I noticed that if I hit the throttle with the car at rest (clutch out and no gear in) the engine makes a light whinny noise. It all happens b.w 1-2k rpm and goes away with more gas. It also happens if I drop into a lower gear to engine break. I will post a a video later today. Again I dont know If iam being pyscho. ps during service they changed engine oil, 6mt oil and differential. Joe

Yeah I've heard it too. Don't know why but I always assumed it was normal.

Its about 85 right now, humid and generally unpleasant out. I just picked my car up from the dealer for the first time, rolled down my windows, turned off the AC and listened to the whine bellow and gurgle all the way home. I cant think of a lot of other things I would rather listen to.

Perfectly normal. It's the cams' gear drive; you can see the gears when removing the oil filler cap. It's actually a hybrid system, where a chain drives the intake cam, and the intake cam drives the exhaust one via gears. Typical engines drive both cams with the same chain. Much nicer than supercharger whine, which I personally hate .

Thank you sir. Really a nice car. I have a 997 Turbo sitting in my driveway and although faster, it doesnt compare to the aural goodness of the high revving normally aspirated V8 of the M3. Really a gem of a engine (I am a sucker for a good motor). I do curse this whole break in thing. Must have been tough. Good luck with your whine, I am still too jaded to offer anything but nonsense at this point. I have a 335 as well (the motor thing) and I ignored all the sounds everyone complains about (wastegate rattle etc etc) and have had 45,000 problem free miles. Dont be too neurotic, some of the things you read here could make one a very paranoid owner.

Pretty normal, those are the timing gears making the sound. I love that sound.

Just got back from that mentioned "destination No Where" Drive i find them to be the best nothing on your mind except the car and the road. The engineering on this car is truly perfection, the whine sound heard that a dozen times I cant get enough of it.

BMW engineers specifically developed that whine to counteract the whining of small children and spouses. BOSE Has been trying to buy the rights to that algorithm since 2007 for their noise canceling headphones.
