Looked at an M3 today..

The thing was amazing. Haha. It was alpine/fox red 6MT and drove it around without even the M button pushed down. Couple questions though..

1) When it was first started, the exhaust was very loud. Not exactly at the tips either, it felt like moreso under the engine. Is this common? After a minute or two it quieted down and you could only hear it out of the exhaust.

2) The one I looked at had some issue with the exterior black window trim. It's pretty much like it was technicolored. It was only the trim on the door itself, but I'm assuming that would be able to be removed. Right?

3) Also, it has cold weather package, navigation, etc, but the salesman said it didn't have sirius installed. Does that sound right? He honestly didn't know how to work the car at all so I really don't trust him. It didn't have premium sound either, do you guys feel that is necessary?

Thanks,
Mike

1. Normal

2. The rubber pieces? Should be able to be removed with any rubber protectant or cleaner.

3. Sounds right, Sirius was a stand alone option. I didnt think opt for premium sound as it was costly for what it offered. Everyone is different though.

Not sure about 1) but your descritpion is a bit vague. For sure in mine, I do NOT hear a difference when cold as if the RPMs were higher due to the cold starter effect.

For 2), again pics would have been helpful. Are you sure there was no protective plastic left on the trim? Mine looks as black as black can be.

3) Sirius is a separate option so this description sounds about right...

Mine sounds like a snoring grizzly bear during cold start up until she gets warmed up. Then she quiets down to my dismay.

Thanks guys. What I meant for (1) is that it sounds like the car has straight headers and nothing else when first started. It's very loud under the car where the engine is located. But a minute or two later and that goes away. And (2) I'm referring to the plastic shadowline? It's just multicolor looking but I don't know if that's normal or not. And for (3) what all would I need to get the sirius system installed? Just a module? I'm assuming all these cars are prewired..

2. Others have had questions about the trim finish. This thread has info on what to do: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140992

3. Do a search or look through the Audio forum. I recall that you can add Sirius, but probably not the BMW OE install.

The reason for number 1, or so I am told by a 30 year BMW tech is that M3 has no air pump, so the car runs extra lean at start up to heat the catalytic convertors quickly then goes back to normal after a minute or so.

It's described in M3 Manual... "when car starts, it has a very loud metallic sound,- it is normal and is necessary requirement for catalitic converter to heat up and reduce air pollution... etc,... after 2 or 3 minutes RPM is lower and the car can be driven then."

I think it is very cool sound when the car warms up so loud with metallic sound,- my friends always get intimidated by it

Premium Sound is Absolutely must have! I had Logic-7 before and I thought that was good enough... yeah right... Premium Sound absolutely blows Logic-7 away! Premium Sound is so much more powerfull

Sirius radio sucks don't waste your money on it.

The multicolor black trim happens when you use detergent on the car to wash it and don't rinse it off properly. Nothing a bit of rubbing with a chamois won't fix, but give the dealer heaps about it, it should be black.

I've had the same window trim discoloration problem a couple of months after I got the car. The shadow trim turned kind of a rainbow color after the rain. And yes, they can replace them, which they did after my local BMW factory rep. inspected my car and authorized the replacement of those trims. BTW, mine is the coupe!

See part number 1 in link below. Says it's an air pump.

It is really compressed. In late 2008 they jacked up the compression rate even further for some of the channels, mostly the talk stations.

I listen to Don Cannon and DJ Premier when they're on Shade 45 and Sirius Hip Hop and that's about it.
