Exclamation M Death? You Decide. WARNING: Graphic Content

What do you think? Is it totaled? I was driving home from work yesterday on a busy street when an old woman in a '95 Lexus pulled out right in front of me attempting to make a left-hand turn. She had a stop sign and lurched forward but abruptly hit the brakes. As this happened I hit my brakes thinking she was about to pull out in front of me. When I realized she was not going I let off the brake and continued on my way. As I closed in on the intersection she darts out right in front of me! The only thing I could do was slam on the brakes and cut right to avoid t-boning her driver-side door. Although that maneuver was successful the outcome was not so great. Luckily both parties were ok. The airbag burned some hair off my right wrist, but that was it. Things could have played out much worse and I certainly feel lucky. One of the things that hurt most was watching the nice cars (M5, C4S, Z06, e93M3, Turbo) roll by and watch their faces cringe. If I had a child I imagine this is how I would feel if he/she was punched in the face, repeatedly.

I just got back from Metropolitan Collision. Andy seems to think the car will not be totaled. He gave me the number of a guy who can determine the depreciated value and have the insurance company send me a check for that amount. I have no idea what to think. I guess I just have to roll with the punches and consider my options...

If it is totaled
1. Buy 2006 e46 M3 competition and transfer mods
2. Buy 2009 e92 M3 DCT JB/gray extended leather

If it is not totaled
1. Cry
2. Keep it, take the depreciated value check and make an amazing track car

Either way, something good will come out of all this, it better!

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

Damn, bro, it's crazy that we were just talking about you holding on to this car for awhile after everything you've put into it. You've got the right attitude though. Life is often out of our hands, and you just have to roll with the punches and look for the positive in the outcome.

I've gotta say, unless there's a lot I'm not seeing (which is often the case), it's pretty close, but it's probably not totalled. It's going to come down to what happened to the motor, which you can't really see from these pictures. A few years back, my E46 was hit by a guy in a new truck with no insurance. It looked like a write-off to me, but the insurance company paid more than $20k to fix it.

The good news is that you brought your car to the best collision repair place in the state. Metropolitan fixed up my E46 perfectly, and I will only go back to them in the future (hopefully, I don't have to). Afterwards, when I took it into CarMax for an appraisal, they could tell that it had been in an accident, but commented that the work was the best they'd ever seen. They said some of the welds looked like they had come from the factory.

I like your positive attitude.

Totalled option #2. DCT is amazing
Not totalled option #1 and then 2. SMG is amazing on the track.

I do love this car and I would keep it but a car that has been in a wreck like this is damaged goods even with Metropolitan Collision behind me. The engine, aside from the fan, radiator, air intake and some electrical is just fine. The strut bar transfered the impact energy to the sides of the car. I was talking to someone on another forum who wrecked his M (nearly the exact same car as mine) who also had Progressive and was given the option to fix it or total it and be paid out $26.6K! He chose the latter, obviously. If this is the case, I think I would do the same, probably buy the 2006 e46 M3 competition, transfer the mods, and continue the goal of a track car.

I really don't know because the idea of having a brand new car is also a very attractive option.

Really sorry this happened with you man. I can relate to your situation since it has happened to me also.

As long as you're ok, that's all that matters.

Now for the exciting part.......Make the decision that you'll be most happy with. Only you can decide.

I've been hoping all day that it could be totaled, but I'm afraid if Andy doens't think it is, then it probably isn't. You know I'll be there to help you make it a sick track car if it comes down to that. Carbon Fiber roof, Moton coil overs, full roll cage...I may be getting ahead of myself. Either way, if it is totaled, I've found a few e46 ZCPs you'll be interested in.

Dude, send them my way regardless. Totaled or not, either way, coming out of this I will have some spare change. Mods can be transfered and the extra cash will inspire me to put a rush on the track car idea. Imagine Euro e46 CSL with a roll cage but even less weight. I just got a boner.

Thanks John! I am starting to get excited about these options. I think if I play these options correctly and choose wisely there will be some good to come of all this and track days will be 10x more exciting!

Yeah, it looked like the strut bar absorbed and passed on some of that beating to other parts of the car.

I hear what you're saying about the car being damaged goods because I felt exactly the same way after my E46 wreck, but I think that's probably more mental than anything else. It took Metropolitan almost 2 months to finish repairing my car, and when they were done, even my anal self couldn't notice any difference from how the car drove originally, on the street and track. I never got over the mental disappointment, however, and ended up selling the car less than a year later.

The nice thing about Metropolitan in my experience is that they really go to bat for you with the insurer. They make sure every last thing is in perfect condition, which really adds up the cost to repair the car, making a write-off more likely.

Good thing is your okay man, thank god. As for the car.............hmmmm.

Having driven both cars its hard, but also the what "if" factor applies. E46 Comp or E92, I love the E92, but I know how hard it would be to part with the E46 as it is timeless and well sorted out too. Whatever god blesses you with, I know you'll be happy!! M...ON!!

Seeing this is truly sad

Not sure what year your car is and the mileage, but it looks like the repair cost would be less than the worth of the car itself if it's a 2005 or newer.

Mine is an '02 with 92k and KBB says it's about 15k last I checked

It's an '04 with 65K miles. Last I checked it was worth $22K. It is just a painful situation, filled with emotion. I really loved that car. And, to make matters worse, her insurance company is taking their sweet a$$ time to get an adjuster out there to investigate the damages. Meanwhile I am crusing around in a Pontiac G6 and it is driving me crazy. I'm starting to lose my patience and positive outlook.

First of all, Glad your Ok. Sorry about your car thoough. Ive always said if this were to happen to me, I'd sit in the car, and tell the Fire Department to cut the roof off so they could get me out of the car because my back hurt too much to move. Once the roof is cut, you dont have to worry about fighting with the insurance company, its totalled... end of story.
