Isn't DSG in R8?
They don't have the technology at this point. The R8 uses an SMG type transmission.

RS4 vs. M5?

Die.

Try
325i vs A4
335i vs. S4
M3 vs. RS4
M5 vs. RS6, Jerk.
M6 vs. Nothing to compete with (please don't say the R8)

The RS4 is designed to compete against the M3, not the M5.

God, statements like that, kill me!

*P.S. They don't use DSG for high torque applications because the DSG cannot withstand the power/torque yet. Thats until the ZSG from BMW.

i agree. i would definately consider getting an RS4 if it came w/ SMG or DSG transmission. my 2nd car needs to be an automatic b/c my wife doesn't drive manual transmission. when i had a 3rd car, it was a manual transmission convertible :rocks:

What do you mean by they dont?

DSG was in A3, no?
What's this "SMG" type transmission?

Any detail info on R8 transmission?

Which will leave E90 M3 vs nothing!

At least for the time being until Audi tries (and possibly may) upstage the E90 M3.

i'm also thinking about the same. so did it cost you only $170k from the dealer as they took $10k off the price due to the onroads?

so 180k drive away then ?

ive been having a look also and spoken to a few dealers and trying to get them to budge on price is near impossible.

what colour did you end up getting?

though i agree, nothing compares to that driving position, seats or torque when you put your foot down... just a shame they are so expensive

I guess I misunderstood your post. Not fair because the E46 M3 loses?? You can not compare E90/E92 M3 vs. RS4 if you do not also compare it with E46 M3. You can't only accept comparos when BMW wins!

The Current E46 M3 is the direct competitor to the RS4. Audi beat BMW to the market in this segment with a great V8 and 400+ hp. Sure the E46 M3 does not have 4 doors but these cars are absolutely competitors. We all have to admit that by most measures of pure performance RS4>E46 M3 (except perhaps in the fun to drive category). When the E92 comes out it will also be a direct competitor to the RS4 (even though they are just about done making/selling those). I think we are all pretty darn certain E92 M3>RS4. Then the most direct competitor the E90 M3 will come out and E90 M3>RS4. Finally Audi will finish the design and release of it's next super sedan and that will probably be > E92/E90 M3 and etc. back and forth. Well the victor may not bounce back and forth with every release as it did take Audi a very long time to unseat any M3.

DSG is available in the A3, GTI, R32. These are cars with transverse mounted engines and Haldex based AWD systems. They also make at most 350NM of torque. (it's not even available in the Euro only S3, because of the torque limitation)

DSG is not available in any vehicle right now with a longitudinal engine, nor is it any vehicle that makes over 350NM of torque (except they Veyron, which doesn't count cause it's a cost no object, limited production setup).

The R8 transmission is just like BMW's SMG transmission or Ferrari's F1 gearbox. It is a conventional manual transmission with hydraulics and a computer to operate the clutch and change the gears.

I hope that clears things up.

I can't agree that the E46 M3 is a fair matchup with the New RS4 the E46 is so old, the technology was about 6 years old when the RS4 began sales...the 06 RS4 vs 01 M3 doesnt cut it...the 08 M3 vs 06 RS4 is more like it.

Either way...its all good.
