Question E92 M3 manual - a bit clonky?

Hi

test drove an M3 today with 13k miles and it sounds very mechanical when slotting into gears 1 and 2. Is this normal?

Compared to my 330 (E46), it took me a while to perform a really smooth gearchange from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd.

Does the diff make noise on full steering lock?

What sort of noises / feel should there be pls?
Cheers

The M3 certainly is a very 'mechanical' car if that makes sense - especially when cold. The engine is louder and the transmission seems noisier. I had test driven the 6MT transmission before deciding on DCT and without starting the 6MT vs. DCT debate, I feel the DCT is far better suited to the current M3 than the manual box. I too found the clutch/box quite heave and clunky in the first 2 gears whereas I gel'd with the DCT box almost instantly.

If I was buying another i would be DCT every time and would not consider a manual one, but hey, it's horses for courses and everyone has different tastes!

Have you driven a DCT based car yet, if not, you should before you decide

Clutch was light but gears (1st & 2nd) and car sounded (and felt) very mechanical.

I'll be buying a manual car..... end of .....sorry.

I think if you test drove the DCT it would most likely to change your mind

I think gear changes can also be a bit clunky sometimes on the DCT as well if you are moving at a slow pace

There's like 1/2 a second pause when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

There shouldn't be any 'clunking'. I would avoid that car or maybe just get a DCT.

clunky + diff sound on full lock

Mate
this sounds suspiciously like the problems I had in jan with car I had off a friend (financed from BMW) with the option to purchase.
Clunky gearbox........... manual
grating sound on full fight right lock - front slip differential
The car was in for the 13k service and the garage refused to acknowledge there was any fault till I took the chief engineer out for a quick spin the the car park and reproduced the noise at will. BMW stoke agreed there was a problem
options were 1. low steering fluid - not so
2. Probs with front slip diff - maybe if the cars been abused / tracked
3. Gearbox ..........

Enough to put me off. Waited for a few months and go the car i wanted if you check my posting............AM3 Newbie!

Say this car wouldn't by anychance be a white E92 with red leather 13k miles jan 58 reg with 57 plate?

Crewe Bluebell have a nice one I'm told

No it's not that car. There is no grinding but there is clunking which I have now been informed is quite normal.

The car is in warranty anyway so if there is a problem it will be fixed. Car has never been tracked and has just had a service at BMW.
