rubbing/grinding sound coming from passenger side rear wheel
I have a sound that is somewhat intermittent, but does seem to present itself almost every time I drive the M. Its a low grinding/rubbing sound that is most evident at lower speeds, but it can be heard at higher speeds too if you listen carefully. it sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the car, and I think its specifically the rear wheel. It almost sounds like the brake pad is rubbing up against the rotor. Kind of a brushing noise...definitely not normal. Anyone else dealt with this? I took off the wheel and inspected both passenger side brakes, but didn't see anything unusual. Could this be a bad caliper stuck and not releasing like its supposed to? Or, maybe an emergency brake problem? Any help would be appreciated. The only other thing I can think of is a bad wheel bearing, but at 44,000 miles that would be far too early for a wheel bearing going bad.

It sounds like the infamous differential grind. My started out at about 12k or so and progressivly got worse particularly on slow tight right hand turns. It eventually got worse to the point where I could hear it while driving 80mph on the expressway. It almost sounded like the tire was rubbing on somehting. I did take it to the dealer. The first time the stated that my break plate needed to be re adjusted. The second time i took it in I showed them the Bmw SB and they then changed the diff fluid which solved the problem. No more grinding noise.

Update: took it to a local shop and after about an hour looking at various things they discovered it was a loose e-brake shoe causing the noise (rubbing on the hub). There are two spring loaded screws that hold it in place and one of them worked itself loose ( it literally fell out as he was taking rotor off). The brake shoe was crooked because of this and that's what was causing the rubbing.
No diff issues...I just changed mine about 7,000 miles ago. Thankfully this was a cheap repair. |
