Tell her that you don't have any vices, unless you have one.
Tell her that you will pick it up in Europe so that she can go to those romantic places.
Show her the budget that you can afford it and that includes some jewelry/dresses for her while you tour Europe.
Tell her that you can save in airfare, 2 for 1.
Tell her that you love her. (and the car in that order)

married, as well.

Here's what you do. Start looking at GTRs and GT3s, Z06 (etc.) F430 (etc.) you get the idea. Then say maybe it's a better to have a family car in 2+2 bla, bla, bla, fancy 'girlie tranny' etc.

you're 'settling' for the M3

After owning sports cars all my life, I had been driving around in the Toyota Corolla I had repossessed from my son five years earlier. I put him through college, and had all my credit card bills paid off.

I had been working on my wife for a month already about the M3, and had visited 4 dealerships and called 4 others. I was even calling in favors from my college-aged son -- who basically owes me BIG TIME. All the dealers knew I was just shopping colors, and red was not only my preference, but also the last color I hadn't seen before placing my order. Then the phone rang: it's my boss on the phone.

My boss calls up on the phone and says "congratulations, you're getting a bonus." Basically, the bonus was enough to pay for the car. So I call my wife and tell her the good news. She says "ok, you can buy the car."

Thirty minutes later, the dealer calls me and says "one of the only two red M3's in California just landed at our dealership...it's sold already...but we know you only want to look at colors." So I go down there immediately, and while I'm standing there, the buyer looks at the car and says he doesn't want it...because it's "too red." Apparently, he likes the red colors I hate, and visa-versa. I quickly look over the features, actually looking for some type of deal-killer. The car was exactly as I was going to order, sans extended leather. Turns out I like the car better without it...but I didn't know that yet.

So I bought the car.

Good luck with your wife, the car is DEFINITELY worth it.
+1 great story...

Since your looking for advice...I'll offer...(full disclosure, I work...wife does not)

(Semi-seriously)...What does it matter what car you drive...my wife had no say in what car I drive...I have no say in what car she drives...simple...

FWIW...my wife really likes the M...but like laszlo's wife...can be a pain about colors...

Besides...if you don't give her this to b##tch about...she will just find something else...and you won't have a M to show for it...

4) Sign up for dance lessons.

5) Promise her that you'll "shag" her more often.

7) Sign a contract promising points 3,4 & 5 with the consequences being that she would become the primary driver of the vehicle.

It worked for me.

Good suggestions but I'm still trying to figure out if she'd view #5 as a promise or a threat...

I have no idea what will work on your wife so...

My wife wasn't really getting it. She wouldn't say no but it wasn't hard to tell she didn't see the point in spending the extra $$ on the M3 over the 335i. We'd driven the 335i and it would have been a very nice replacement for my aging E36 M3. I said I wouldn't be happy spending $50,000 without at least seeing what the new M3 had to offer. That seemed reasonable on the face of it. One drive and she was on board. The interior materials are much nicer, big selling point. The handling is superior, my wife got that too and it was also a big point. The engine is better, my wife understood that I liked that better but I don't believe it made the same impression with her.

I can't say it will work but until she's driven it you really haven't even tried to convince her. If your wife loves you and knows what you like, driving the car is the best convincing she can get. If you can afford the M and you convinced her that the 330xi was worth it then it becomes just a question of getting her in the M for her to see why it's important to you. She will enjoy the quality and ride in the M better than your old car and you have to have something nice to take her out in on date night.

Let her pick the colors. If you don't mind being seen with your wife in public then how bad can the colors she picks for your car be?

Nope! Mine really wants me to get the M3 and starts to get passive-aggressive when I mention other cars.....

BTW why are most women more concerned with clothes, shoes, jewelry and cosmetic surgery than cars? I don't get it.

Remind her that the looks, ride, quality, power, steering, brakes, leather, audio, engine sound and cachet are all better in the M3 than other 3 series.

I always sell my wife on the car saying that the M3 is the best car for avoiding accidents actively (due to superior brakes, handling, power, etc) that also seats both kids and carries plenty of stuff when you run errands. Powerful brakes and performance tires combined with alert driving are the best auto safety systems imho. #2 = seatbelts.

Talking What you need is a up grade

You have a 2004 330i and a 2008 X5 3.0

I take it you are driving the 2004 330i and you are tired of this car by now its getting old real quick. So what you need is a up grade and what better way to do it than a M3. Since you say money is not a issue than this should not be a big issue plain and simple. A long with this she might ask what do you need all that horse power for. Well you can reply I don't really need all that horse power its just nice to know its there if I need it. and Since I am pretty sure she is driving the X5 the new vehicle. Then it is fair that you get to up grade the old 2004 330i get your own new vehicle and what better than a brand spanking new M3 like they say all is fair in love and war and by the way I am married and in the Military and my wife still wonders how I can spend all this money on a car. All I can say to her is that she got a brand new car straight off the show room floor paid in full with half of my M3 down payment only because I had to come back to the states from Germany and both of our cars were German spec. so we had to sell them both and get American spec cars for the states I sold my 7 series and ordered a M3 1 year later I am still waiting on the M3 to be built and she is still driving a new car unlike myself so basically my wife has no room to talk or complain.

significant other? unless you are referring to your "life partner"!!! just use the old fashioned term: wife.

S.O. is what adults call their girlfriend/boyfriend since using those terms in conversation will convince her/him that you are immature.

"Me and my girlfriend are going steady!" doesn't work after high school graduation.

thanks for the response -you're correct about her driving the X but of course we didn't get the 4.8 because of exactly what you said..."who needs all that horsepower etc..." -basically trying to apply the same principle to the 3 series and say you get same luxury on a 328. Of course the difference in luxury factor with an M3 is huge...so this angle may play better than the horsepower...

btw for your service to this country...

harp on the M5 (or any other more expensive car for that matter) for a while... then tell her you're willing to "compromise" as you are reasonable and appreciate her sacrifices.

should work... unless she knows you better... ha ha...

cheers
