Always get a second opinion

My car's service was due and the car is out of warranty. I had the steering vibration issue for quite a bit and I figured it was a good idea to do a road force balance at the same time. I took the car to a reputable shop that I have been to for a long time for different kinda stuff in Pasadena (I'm not gonna name the shop) and told them to do the service and the road force balance. They even said they were the only shop around that had the equipment for that. The next day I picked up my car and was told the car was serviced, road force balance was performed and everything was good. However, I still had steering vibrations. I couldnt think of any other possible issues, so I went to Tire Central in San Gabriel for another road force balance. To my surprise, they said two rims on front and rear of passenger side were bent. I was allowed to see the rim spinning in the machine and it was very OBVIOUS. They fixed the front rim for me and asked me to take the rear to another shop because it was severely bent and they couldnt do it. After that, the vibration was dramatically reduced even though the rear was still bent. Today I took the rim to another shop who fixed the rim for $100 and the vibration was reduced to minimum.

After the whole thing, I was really pissed at the first shop who probably didnt even do the road force balance and charged $120 for it despite the fact that I have been to the shop for all these years for different bimmers and recommended it to my friend. Maybe they forgot to do it, but they shouldve just told me.

The moral of the story is that always to get a second opinion on things. End of rant...

One more question, for the minimum steering vibration that I'm still getting, should I do an alignment or one more road force balance? the tech at shop said I dont need any more road force balance because he already did when he fixing the rim.

thanks for reading this and hope you guys have better luck than me

Sorry but I hate these threads "dealer did this, shop did that" but I'm "not going to tell you who they are".

If they told you that two rims were bent, they did the force matching....and they spun the two rims for you to see. They did the service that you requested. Quit complaining because you bent two rims. It happens all the time.

Sounds like the first shop just took your money and ran. Sorry to hear that. At least you got the problem figured out.

Can you take the reciept and repair order from the shop that did actually perform what you wanted to the first shop and call them out on it? Perhaps they'll compensate you or refund your money?

Yeah, you could probably ask the first shop to refund you after showing them you actually had to get two rims repaired. They should do this out of goodwill or at least for fear of getting a bad Yelp

pretty much a roller that is pressed against the tire, and is supposed to simulate the road force that your tire will experience; then it submits data to show where the weights need to be applied to the rim.

Ghetto2315 made a good point ... take your receipt of work done after they said they did back to the first shop and have a word with the Manager or Owner ... they should refund you your money.

Look at it this way ... not every thread or post is meant for you ... others can uses some heads up ... all the OP did is share his experience with us ... to help out some of the folks that can use the help ... No need to criticize him for that is there now?

For such a major issue, not sure how it could be an honest mistake.

Anyone can make a mistake, so I would not go all crazy and bringing down the shop, but OP has to bring it to them to figure out what happened there.

Who cares? A mistake is a mistake. Save us from having an "honest mistake" happen to anyone else.

Yeah I mean I understand the OP doesn't want to give the shop a bad rep because it could have been an honest mistake.... but still, the whole point when you make a "garage/shop/dealer did XYZ thing badly" is to inform everyone else on the forum WHAT shop did it, so we can avoid it in the future. If you don't name the place then the thread is just OP complaining with no purpose :P

You could always wait till you talked to the first shop in Pasadena, and if they refund you and admit that they must have missed it, then you're good. Or if they weasel their way out of it and avoid paying you, and are generally very rude to you, then you tell us who it is so we can avoid them
