The article is about the X1 "2.8", and mentions that the X1 is the only car to presently have the engine.

I was told it will come in the X5 as well, already this year. (at least in Europe)

Gonna miss the IL6 =( But it seems like IL4T are the way of the future.

More torque, easy to tune, better mpg...

Since the current 528i w/ 8-speed does 22/32. This engine in the x1 could probably do the same or a bit better since it's lighter weight and with better tech. Great little engine.

I am very happy with the specs of this new 4 cyl engine, my only concern is the engine sound. I really do not like how most 4 cyl engines sound.

I highly doubt the M's will be built off a 4 cylinder engine. The next generation M3 is slated to be a I6 TT...and the M5 and M6 definitely will not be getting a 4 cylinder

The next 1M (which may be renamed to M2) will get a turbo 4 that is based on this new motor.

It's about time. Strong engine, and this is the first iteration. Will be interesting to see how reliable it will prove to be out of the gate...but looking good for when I need my next car. Much lower tax bracket than my current 2.5L I6, more HP, and more torque, less weight and uses less fuel. So...just the smoothness and turbo lag to feel more myself...but I for one am very sure BMW engineers got this right.

The 35mpg number is not only based on imperial gallons, it is also based on the Euro cycle for testing efficiency, which produces much higher numbers. An earlier poster commented that this engine will be more efficient than his 335d - um, no it won't. On the same euro cycle, the 335d is rated at 42.2 mpg combined, or 20% better. The same 335d is rated at 27mpg combined in the US, so using some math we can estimate that the 35mpg euro cycle figure for this new engine should translate to roughly 22.4 US mpg combined.

If it sounds like I'm ragging on this engine, it's because I kind of am. I just don't see the point of a gasoline 4 banger. It's not like it's anything radical or new. They could make a diesel 4 cylinder with the same horsepower and performance only it would get a very real US combined 35mpg. Now that would be an impressive engine. This? Meh.

Another factor is BMW has prided itself in it's NA I6s. Now they're just joining the ranks of Ford, VW, Subie, and Mitsu. I really hope it's nothing like the BMW designed turbo DI 4 banger I drove in a 2011 MCS over the weekend. The engine was pretty good power wise for a 4 banger, but it's NVH was similar to a lawn mower.

True enough, but how many people do you think will believe a BMW to have a performance penchant with a small diesel under the hood? Forget the Bimmerpost crowd, we "get it," but the rest of the buying world? Not so much. It's going to be hard enough to sell a 4-cylinder, but at least BMW can tout the big power numbers and the decent fuel efficiency of this engine. Me? I want a 123d!!

Am I missing something here? is Honda ahead of its time, or is BMW lagging behind.
You are missing something...

S2000 2.0L 237hp 153lb-ft
BMW Turbo I-4 245hp 258lb-ft

Also better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
So its kjnd of like you are saying a C63 has more torque than the M3 so its better?

I average 24-25 Mpg in the 135, your spline may be a bit off.

In EU , BMW offers a 60mpg car.

Yeah, that comparison did not tell the whole story, as the key difference is not torque numbers but a usable torque range. In S2000 the peak torque was developed in a very tiny range - you almost need 10+ gears to get both usable power and reasonable fuel economy (which would still be much worse than the BMW's new engine).
