Thats the reason I bought the M3 and got rid of the 335i(16.4 mpg avg over 22 months)!

EVO: turbocharged, all-aluminium inline-4 engine. Evolutions are expected to be between 300 hp (220 kW) and 360 hp (270 kW).

STI: The latest US model of the STI has 305 bhp and 290 ft·lbf of torque (Horizontally Opposed 4-cylinder Single turbocharger, DOHC, 4-valves per cylinder.)
Somewhat different engines, BMW's engine will feature direct injection to focus on fuel economy where both of the above suck in that case. Performance wise, I think it's safe to say, BMW went with a conservative tune once again as in the N54/N55, wait till a tune hits the streets for these engines.

These specs are very similar to Fords 2L ecotec engine which is rated at 247hp for the upcoming Focus ST.

And with regards to the Audi 2.0T, it may be rated at 211hp, but it usually dynos close to that amount to the wheels. Although who knows what this new BMW engine will actually dyno. Obviously the N54 was way underrated, wouldn't be surprised if this engine is closer to 260hp.

There's definitely potential here to compete with the very small market that is the WRX/STi Ralliart/Evo. As of now this X1 seems to be somewhere in the Ralliart/WRX territory. It's not like these Japanese counterparts are particularly sporty in comparison.

I have to feel that a 2L twin scroll turbo with DI can edge about a bit more power albeit more peaky than it is tuned for now.

Either doing that (plus maybe a sport package/etc) OR putting the N55 under the hood will put you square in STi/Evo territory (and remembering that an Evo MR is probably similar in price as well).

I find myself in agreement with those who are excited about the new turbo four. It looks like two thirds of an N55, but probably has more boost. Time will tell if the horsepower is as conservatively rated as the N55.

Comparisons to the STI and EVO are not appropriate as those cars have poor fuel economy. So poor that I don't see much of a future for them without significant revisions. Remember that in the US small cars must have much better fuel efficiency than under the old rules where everything was averaged together.

Although Hundai has a turbo 4 rated at 275 horsepower, I am willing to bet the 245 HP BMW motor will surpass it in both acceleration and drivability.

I'd rather BMW going turbo charged I4 instead of a novocain induced hybrid I4 motor as Lexus is doing these days.

They should build inline-5 engine like the audi TT RS, i believe 5 cylinders better than 4 cylinders with turbo chargers, am i right?

Yeah, definitely wouldn't mind seeing an ///M version of this... maybe in a light weight 2 seater 1M or something similar

You also gotta remember that this engine isn't being developed for the purpose of being put into a sports car, it's to serve entry-level duty in place of the old n/a I6. That means enough hp to make it lively, but without sacrificing drivability low in the rev range and keeping good fuel economy. People don't opt for the entry level engine because it makes the most hp.

The EVO 2L engine is not DI, has a relatively large stock turbo that can produce well over 20psi and when combined with AWD gets piss poor fuel economy. Same story with the STi.

Does anybody know the redline? With peak horsepower at 5,000rpm, it'll be a huge change from the N52 which would pull hard to it's 7,000rpm redline.

The trade off is more torque lower and better gas milage, not bad for an entry model.

Am I missing something here? is Honda ahead of its time, or is BMW lagging behind.
Honda hasn't discovered torque yet.

Sounds like it will be a fantastic engine.....now if BMW could work on decreasing vehicle weight that would be even more impressive

a turboed 4 is definitely good for the future. I mean better mpg, lower emissions, but there is one thing that really annoying. Today an evo passed me at full throttle, it sounded like a woman screaming not a nice noise at all. I still would prefer an I6 over a 4 anytime. As for the badges the 128 and 130 and the 135 need to have different badges to differentiate between the engine output tho all of them are a 3.0l engine

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

This sets a really high bar for the next 1M.

Not only that but it moves the bar higher for the current lineup. This engine has more HP and TQ than the N52 and better fuel economy. As long as it drives well and does not have the fuel pump issue of the N54/N55 then it is a win/win.

You guys have to remember, these are European numbers for MPG. They roughly translate into a 20% HIGHER number than what we'll get in the US.
That being said, we're looking at 29MPG combined and we have a WINNER!!!

Still haven't found a 4 banger that sounded good. Even Audi's vaunted 2.0t in the 2010 A4 to me sounds like s#$%. I wouldn't mind this as an option to slot below the 328i, but sounds like they're killing the last of the NA I6 engines in the US. To all the N52 bashers, keep in mind BMW is giving us the crappiest 3.0 NA motor available. The Euro guys get the N53 3.0 I6 NA WITH direct injection and a variable intake manifold while our 3.0 NA I6's do without.

Yeah the whole point is to keep up with Audi with cost and fuel economy, this will replace the n52 in the 328 I'd assume and there will still be a premium 6cyl engine (n55 prob), makes sense to have turbo 4 and turbo 6 as the 3 series engine offerings.
