Leaking oil after running over rock

Just drove over a rock size of a fist, now it's leaking oil. How bad is the damage? I'm guessing pretty bad. Happened to anyone here before? It was on the middle of the road and car ahead drove over it and when it showed up it was too late.

Probably coming from your oil cooler right? How much oil?
I definitely wouldn't want the engine running.

I am not sure, it's directly under the engine. Perhaps its the drain plug got dislodged? I just got it towed. It was leaking oil but not excessive. It was dripping slowly at the insurance lot.

There was something hanging out like a plastic fitting, around the size of half a coke can.

The exact same thing hapenned to me a few years ago. It is the DCT oil pan that got damaged in my case. The DCT oil pan is made out of plastic, so it can easily get damaged. The DCT oil pan is not protected by the aluminum subframe under the engine. It is covered by one of those felted belly covers, so the oil leak was right under the engine.

In my case, there was barely any evidence of damage, the felted cover only had a very light scratch. It was the DCT plastic drain plug that got pushed in and stripped the thread in the pan.

If it is the case, the damage is not bad. You just need to replace the DCT oil pan. I don't know how much oil you lost, but I would not drive the car to avoid damaging anything further.

That's what insurance is for. Take it in and get it looked at by a professional (preferably via tow).

If it's a catastrophic puncture of the oil pan, you'll lose all the oil in 5 mins. This sounds like a minor puncture in a line.

I didn't have any oil leaks but...
I broke the black plastic oil cooler protector (in the middle)
both of the black skirts under my oil cooler air ducts (on the sides)
and one oil cooler air duct (just the black part)

It cost me like 500 bux to replace. I wish I would have took pictures now.

Take it to the dealer and get an estimate. if its too expensive, call your insurance for a claim.

+2 depending on OP's deductible, $500 is at the break-even point. But there's also a labor cost.

My deductible is $500, but I imagine you need at least 2 hours to install the parts.

I believe the black thing I saw hanging out was the one in the middle of the plate under the engine

The black thing you are talking about could be the rubber jack point in the middle of the subframe. You can actually see it on the picture.

Any updates?

definitely sounds like he saw the jack point which has no bearing on anything leaking. the leak is elsewhere.

OP, I feel for you. The same thing happened to me this past fall and I ended up with a new engine and exhaust system. Thank goodness insurance covered everything. Hope yours doesn't go the route of mine. Had to wait a month to get the car back because they had to get the engine from Germany.
