What's it like to own a Lamborghini?
How's this car look?
Price doesn't seem bad, $99k for 2005 Gallardo. Could probably knock it down to $90k. Even then, this car will be a bigger pussy magnet than a brand new F42 M3 in my opinion. Anyways, I'm a backyard mechanic. I wonder how easy it would be to work on this kind of car at home with jack stands . And don't tell me I need to invest in high quality oil. I'm sure if I buy 10 quarts of Mobil 1 at Walmart and change it out every 3K miles, it should be sufficient. Ever since I was 8 years old, I've TRULY loved Lamborghini's. Not so much Ferrari's. Even if Ferrari were faster or better. I just love the lines on the Lambo. Plus, you don't buy this car to race like a maniac. It's just a straight up attention getter. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac...782814866.html |

Well I'm kind of a socioeconomic snob/purist when it comes to owning exotic cars. Personally I'd only buy one if I could afford one brand new and paid for out of pocket which would take about $25M+ assets (preferably liquid net worth) to comfortably do.
I mean owning a used $90k gallardo looks nice at first glance but expect a lot of problems if you intend on driving it 10k or 15k+ miles a year (or more). And actually that brings me to another point, I would feel silly spending $90k for a used lamborghini and then only driving it like 3-5K miles/year. If I bought an exotic car, I'd certainly take care of it but I'd also drive it (mostly) like a daily driver, but then again I don't really "get" this "beater car/daily driver vs weekend car" thing that a lot of people do. From what I've heard, these used Gallardos are just a ticking time bomb waiting to explode with respect to being a maintenance nightmare. If you're willing to take that risk, then go for it. If you're planning on mitigating that risk by barely driving the car, then I say what's the point? Sure, it's a huge attention grabber, but 1) Personally I'd feel sheepish driving a used lamborghini knowing that people are looking at me thinking I paid $200k+ for the car 7 or 8 years ago (but to each his own) and 2) I wonder if it's really a good value @ $90k regardless of how you intend to drive it. If you drive it a "healthy" amount, then you have to worry about reliability issues, at which point you'll wonder you would've been better off buying a brand new porsche 911 or something. |

If you can afford to loose $100K, go for it. Then let Bimmer Post guys take it for a test drive

Affording $100k isn't the problem. It's affording the depreciation, maintenance and taxes.
I've read places that the per mile cost of ownership can range from as little as $1 per mile to $3/$4 and even $5 per mile if something goes wrong. Now I could afford dropping $90k on the car. I couldn't afford dropping $10 - $15k per year on maintenance and depreciation on top of that though. |

I think it's a bad decision.
Manufactured in 2005, it means it's 8 years old. It's too old if you want to drive it, and not old enough if you want to garage it for selling years later as a collection vehicle. Inside the car, the already obsolete electronics will be very obvious. I guess that a brand new car and big money are a better magnet for pussies than an 8-year old Lamborghini and little money. I think you'd be much better off buying a $60k-70k brand-new BMW / Audi / Mercedes, and with the savings on annual maintenance and service costs of a Lamborghini Gallardo you will afford at least a high-league pussy. Maybe two if you're good at this |

I agree with what others have posted. You're thinking of purchasing a vehicle that is known for reliability problems, not a big deal. But you're thinking of purchasing an 8 year old car known for reliability problem out of warranty, big deal! Keep in mind the (probable) difficulty in finding parts for it that will make maintaining it difficult without lots of money, time and effort. Its hard to get pussy when you're stuck under a car.
As others have stated, get a used 911T or 911 Carrera in a bright color with nice wheels and loud exhaust. Chicks won't know the model or year, all they'll know is that you drive a Porsche. It will attract plenty of attention. I know its not a Lambo, but you'll also have a newer car that you can drive hard without fear of it breaking and costing you major grip. I know you stated that you want to drive slow and be seen in the car rather than running it, but thats not possible. People are going to want to hear you rev it, and then the natural tendency to showboat starts. |

In his defense, even the navigation on the 2008 135i that you drive seems like Atari compared to the 2009+ systems and it does make the car look dated. It was one of my biggest gripes about E46 M3s when I was looking at them. His point regarding the lower maintenance costs of a newer BMW vs and older Lambo are also valid. Sometimes you have to look past the giant boner you get from owning a Lambo and see what it would really be like to live with it every day. I'm not sure why you're taking issue with some very real truths.

I'll make a suggestion that I do not believe has been made. If you're wanting to go the route you discussed, around $90K on an exotic mid engine sports car, why not a V8 Audi R8. The V8 is more reliable.

OP; the best thing anyone can tell you is to do some homework on the reliability of that car. Sometimes when things seem too good to be true, they are. However, other times it really is a good bargain and you will be happy you took the deal.

If you want it just to chase pussy, $90k will buy a lot of hookers and no maitenance or depreciation worries.

Yeah, the r8 would be hard to ignore in this situation. It certainly has the exotic look / is exotic. Unfortunately, even used ones seem to be priced around $120k.
This one is decent: 2011 R8 Spyder Or this Red on for a little more: 2011 R8 Spyder |

My concern would be the type of girls that it would attract... probably a lot closer to hookers (albeit fancy hookers) than something that I'd be interested in.

In my 5 minutes of internet research, I've found:
Oil change: $250-500 Annual: $2,000 Egear clutch: $7,500-15,000

200% increase in insurance: $2,000 more per year Taxes: $1,000 - $1,500 (at least here in Massachusetts) Damage to vehicle from keying: $1,000 It would probably be safe to say yearly running costs to be around $5,000 - $7,500. Which would give you roughly a per mile cost of $2. For most, the problem is buying an exotic car, the problem is maintaining an exotic car. |

I went to the Lambo forums and found out the cost of ownership of Gallardo is roughly $3-4 per mile. That's almost $30-40k a year if one drives 10-12k miles a year.
However, I also found out that to rent one in Los Angeles or San Diego is about $1200-1600 a day (100 miles per day free). Each additional mile cost about $3.60-5 a mile. So that comes out to a $12-16 a mile for the first set of miles. Each additional mile drops down to a cheaper rate. So best to drive more to get more value. Sounds like it may be better for me to just rent it on the days I need it. |
