The poll is not surprising since a majority of car enthusiasts would have probably driven MT before or owned a MT. In addition, the phasing out of MT is relatively quite recent. It would be quite surprising if most people on this forum never drove MT.

im with you guys. 20+ yrs of driving MT and never fully mastering heel/toe makes me want to be able to practice it more often so i have the ability to hop into any track car. however the dct is the future, and amazing. no person with MT will ever be able to beat it.

had tons of bmw 6mt cars including 4 e92M3's and currently have my first DCT and love it. Both trans have their benefits IMO so I am unable to pick which one I favor over the other at this time. Lets just say I would not be disappointed if I got either one.

Got DCT, have owned MT cars in the past. As mentioned multi times, advantages for each. I do miss rowing my own gears. Future plans: "pass M car on" to wife and get MT car. Can't justify getting a 4th car in stable as of yet.
I have a 5 year old and 7 year old boys. I hope to teach em how to drive MT someday. Don't want it to be a lost art. |

Always was manual driver, except when it came to the family SUV like our X5, I even had a manual 535i, not many of those around in the US.
First time I looked at the M3 it had a DCT and I really enjoyed it. I found this transmission to be a perfect match for the M3. For my next car, if it has an equivalent of DCT I might go with that. Otherwise I'll most likely go back to manual. I'm not religious about it and like to think for myself. I also don't have the need to drive a manual to prove anything to anyone. Lastly, I don't see the DCT as an automatic in the traditional sense. I never leave the DCT in auto mode and always shift manually, so I don't feel any lack of involvement with the car. |

This was going to be my first response:
I love a good manual but in an urban environment the DCT is more than an adequate replacement and it's fantastic on the track. Unless I move to the boonies (I never will), I'm sold on DCT. This is my real response: Screw manual, DCT is awesome and I won't go back. |

16yrs of manuals only and I got DCT after walking in wanting a manual m3 and walking out with a DCT. I do miss the manual from time to time but overall I love DCT more.
Now if BMW could incorporate a quick neutral engagement pulling both paddles back; I would be super happy! That's the only thing I dislike about DCT. No quick way to throw a rev or pop the clutch at whatever rpm YOU choose. Manual only for any other car. DCT for the m3.

Coming from an e46 M3 6MT, just got an e90 DCT. I'm a software engineer so new technology always interests me.
Some days I miss the manual, but firing an aggressive upshift with the flick of a paddle usually makes me forget that. So smooth and sharp. Overall I'm very happy with my choice. |

The first thing I tried to do when I drove the DCT was pull on both paddles to throw it into neutral and blip the throttle, just like you're describing! I enjoyed doing that in the Gallardo I drove one time [/QUOTE]
Lol, I tried that, too. |

First ten years of driving I had nothing but stick but these dual clutch transmissions are quite brilliant. If I didn't live in the city I'd still have one manual car just for the experience, but an auto SUV and DCT performance car currently suits me perfectly. Certainly a helluva step forward from SMG, BMW did an amazing job with the dual clutch.

Last car: 2008 E92 M3 6-speed - loved it. Awesome car, all the control and fun of a stick shift.
Current car: 2011 E92 M3 M-DCT - feels like a different, better car. It does everything well. It genuinely feels like this car was designed for DCT. I do miss stick sometimes, but all in all it's definetly an upgrade over 6MT.

The reality is you are missing out one way or another. Look at all the DCT owners in this thread admitting they miss rowing their own gears. Look at this guy who sold his DCT because of it.
You have to sacrifice something with either transmission. Either you lose speed in acceleration, or you lose the full-body engagement with the vehicle. For me, I went back and forth numerous times. I drove DCT and it was neat, but I knew deep down I'll miss rowing my own gears. So the only way I'd get a DCT is if I also had a 6MT car to toy around with as well. I chose 6MT because I can only have one car at this point in my life. I can mod a 6MT to make it faster than a (stock) DCT, but I can't mod a DCT to give me full-body engagement, no matter how much I spend. To me, that was the deal-breaker.

I'm with Vic, at least until either my left leg falls off or MT is just no longer an option. 29 years of driving an MT and someday I may enjoy not using all my limbs to drive, but until then, I'm good.
Also, with these things out of warranty, what will the long term cost be of the DCT? If it's anything like the other BMW automatics, it can become far more expensive than a clutch, no? As another note, I seriously enjoy the technology BMW has put forth with the DCT. Lambos/Ferraris as we all know aren't daily drivers, and, even though I'm of Sicilian descent, Italians don't build cars to last so comparing those dual clutch systems would pale in comparison to what BMW has accomplished here with these powerful S65s as daily drivers. Truly remarkable.

I drove 2 previous e92 M3's with MT (one was a slightly used one and the other brand new). Wife wanted to go to only one car so after long discussions she agreed to go to an automatic (DCT M3) I said okay (smiling internally) and I traded the brand new M3 having only 1200 miles (2000 KM) in for a new e92 with MT.
I do like them both, however, now having driven the DCT for almost a year I like the DCT and am not sorry I traded. The bad news is wife changed her mind and we still have our DD.

auto-manual, same principle as no third pedal is what I was trying to convey.
