Upgrade to Win7 Ultimate or keep Vista?

I have the chance to switch to Win7 Ultimate (64 bit) since a friend of mine bought the program and ripped it onto a cd.

Currently I have Vista Home Premium installed on my desktop. While I think it's pretty good, I have heard that Win7 is less finicky and runs somewhat faster.

Does anyone have first hand experience with it?

From the very very little experience I have with Win7, it seems very quick and is rather intuitive...I would do it.

Bought it put it on a CD ?? Perhaps you need to check which version you're installing.

From my limited experience with it, this is what I find:

I built a computer a few months ago with gaming and dealing with Vista in mind. Vista is a complete fat pig of a resource hog, and many people have built their computers with that in mind. Some people who had great computers with XP ended up with milquetoast or unuseable computers trying to run Vista. If you have the appropriate and adequate hardware, you can pretty much nullify its hunger.

Also, pretty much all of the bugs have been worked out of Vista. It is solid and stable. Of course it got a bad rap for good reason, but has since proven it can be what it should have been from the beginning.

I have been running Win7 for a few days, and I have to say it is, without a doubt, much faster. Like others have said, it's what Vista should have been. I'm not a fan of the appearances unique to this version, but I suppose I can just get used to it.

I have decided to preorder my copy because I like it, but I would have to say if you're on the fence and your computer handles Vista nicely, it might not be worth the upgrade. Win7 will probably have teething problems too, just not nearly as bad as Vista did. But the OS that Vista is now is a great OS minus its appetite for resources.

If it comes down to, "will I use $XXX to buy Win7 or mod my car?" and Vista works fine, then don't even bother.

I've been using different versions of Windows 7 since the first beta came out and I can easily say it is much better than Vista in every way. I had it installed on my desktop since the beginning and I recently installed it on my laptop. The only trouble I had was finding 64 bit drivers but eventually you'll find it. I say go for it and don't look back.

Final Version of W7 has been leaked.

Not saying where to get it, just stating the facts...

The only way to officially get W7 legally is if you are with a company that does volume business with Microsoft and have MVLS access. They released the downloads for large companies to begin testing and companies like Dell to start installing it on hardware.
Retail wise you can't get it until October.
Other than cracked versions on torrent sites, regular peeps just have access to the beta which I think is still free.

I would say definitely get it over Vista. Vista was much improved with SP1 and SP2 but W7 is even better. Less of a resource hog and more features built right in. Definitely solid launch potential.
