I'm in the Middle East right now on a "business trip" and am driving one of these cars (Gov't leased). It's actually a Chevy Caprice. It's the same exact car though, only I believe the Chevy version is much better looking. It's got the GTZ package, which loads up the options pretty well, but most importantly it's got the 6.0 liter, 361(or362) hp 385 lb/ft-tq V8 with a 6-sp auto, and of course a RWD LSD (I confirmed that on the first day). You can take the traction control off and set the transmission to "sport" for faster shifts and it holds lower gears longer. With the traction control off, you can do endless burnouts, but we don't do that with gov't leased vehicles (had to throw that disclaimer in).

It's a very large car and heavy. There is far more room in the back seats than there is in a suburban (even with the front seats way back). It's powerful, yes, but not even close to being "sporty". I have no doubts that my 335i is quite a bit faster and definitely more agile and fun to drive. That's even rediculous to comare the two, but I needed a very large sedan, with some serious balls, this would be considered.

Unfortunately you guys in the US won't be getting Australias Holden Caprice (luxo barge as we call it). Its actually quite a nice 7 series or 5 series substitute. From what i read a while ago it goes 5.7 seconds to a 100kms. Very comfortable ride with performance as a plus

That 6.0 V8 G8 or Impala or Commodore would make a great police/patrol car though!

15/24. It's not that bad. The BMW 550i with a smaller 4.8 V8 that produces 360 HP as well gets 15/23. The Mercedes E550 also gets 15/23. Stupid German automakers!!!

Seriously, stop talking out of your ass. If you knew anything about the Small Block V8, it's very fuel efficient even with the large displacement. The M3 gets 14/20 BTW even though it is apples vs oranges since the G8 is bigger and heavier then the M3. The 550i and E550 are about the same size and weight as the G8 so that is what I compared it against.

Yeah, what he said... It's not much less fuel efficient than our N54, and quite a bit better (in fuel efficiency, that is) than an E46 or E9X M3. It's got 361HP and 385lb/ft T@ with RWD and LSD and I know the Chevy Impala has a 6spd Auto... it's not great, but not bad. Like I said earlier, it would be a great cop car, or big family sedan with TONS of room in the back seats.

I just read that the G8 GT is priced at 32k MSRP with all options. Astounding value for money and thats not even factoring the expected rebates etc. I plan to test drive this car to see how good it is irl. So far initial reviews seem favorable save for the auto shift points.

So far all the ones in the area I find are V6's. No signs of GT's yet.

I like this car A LOT. It's not for me, but it's finally a car for dad who doesn't want to give up his toys yet. I'm an american muscle guy as well, and a lot of the stuff these days is pathetic. This is car is very well priced for a full size family sedan with balls. Sure, you could get a 5, but the 5 also costs a lot more. This is affordable for everyone.

american automakers? lol the M cars have pretty crappy mileage too... if you want a fuel efficient american car there are going to plenty to choose from in the coming years... i mean there are a few pretty fuel efficient american cars these days... i just hope they get it even more up there since that will be america's new niche... fuel efficient/alternative fuel cars.

THIS CAR is Australian produced, designed and engineered! Yes HOLDEN Aus is getting funds from GM and yes the donk is from GM but everything else is HOLDEN. The Camaro that you guys will soon have is also being tested, developed and improved by Holden engineers in Oz. Most spy pics have been taken on our Aussie highways. The G8 is a great bang for your buck car and anyone who says otherwise is a plain fool.

Its unfortunate that you guys aren't receiving our HSV's (yet) because they are quite a beast for the money. www.hsv.com.au for pics and models.

The HSV-GTS is a beast with the LS7 motor stuffed inside.

Holden gets funds from GM because GM owns Holden. But, yeah I am disappointed in that the GXP didn't look like the HSV.

I sat in the G8 at NYC show. It is the size of a 5-series for sure. The rear seat leg room is incredible - I could cross my leg without a problem.
Fit and finish is very good, although the materials weren't up to BMW standards. The price for a loaded G8 should only be about $34K though at launch. It does look pretty good in real life. Very sharp lines unlike the new Dodge Challenger - yuk!
The new Challenger looks gross in real life. The side looks like a bill board it's so big and it actually weighs MORE than the Pontiac G8, which is a 4-door vs. a 2-door.

Oh, I used to average 20mpg in my 2006 Z06. That was all my driving. I reset the computer right before I went to Corvettes @ Carlisle (about 110 miles one way) and got 26mpg on the highway. Not bad for a car that dynoed at 445 rwhp.

GM build quality and solid cars outside of the US like Holdens, Opels, Vauxhalls etc. They just don't have faith in US tastes/consumers and reserve only their crappiest for the domestic market

Watch it I like my Aura very much( don't believe the media falling for GM's pitch that the Aura is the Vectra. It's an Opelized G6. Though the next Aura coming next year should be close to 100% to the next gen Insignia. Much like the Saturn Astra is a 100% clone of the Opel Astra).

I'm tired of people comparing HP/liter.. Sure, the BMW V8 is 'only' a 4.8 liter motor whereas the GM motor is a monsterous 6.0 liter, and they are making the same horsepower.. I believe we should look at HP/engine-weight . I believe the GM 6.0 is lighter than the BMW 4.8... It has less moving parts and is thus a simpler than the BMW motor. Plus, there is SO much tuning potential in these small block motors. Finally, it runs fine on 87 pump gas..

I am a BMW fanatic, and I love their inline-6 engines.. However, I think that their V8 engines are overly complicated. They put all of this engineering into their V8 yet it still gets worse mileage than the CSB motor (chevy small block). If I ever got a 5-series, it'd be a 535i..

I'm still pretty tempted to pick up one of these G8's, but only if they come out with a manual transmission.

My point is that if I were to get a v8 powered car, it'd be a G8.. If I want another silky smooth, growling BMW engine, I'll be picking up a 535i..
