i think about this all the time.

not to mention engines are getting so complex to battle fuel economy its going to hurt reliability at some point.

everyone wants more out of engines. more power more fuel economy smaller engines

Parts don't seem to be that expensive, I'm seeing upgraded rod bearings anywhere from $700-$1500. It's the labor that will be the real expense, as I believe the engine needs to come out before the rod bearings can be replaced.

Got it the way I wanted and keeping as long as I have garage space. Hopefully until I die and then on sunny days my kids can drive around dad's old car with manual trans, V8 and hydraulic steering.

Blackstone Labs dominates the oil analysis business. As for bearings, getting the OEMs with WPC treatment seems popular. VAC coated bearings are also used but there's concern that coating by its nature makes the bearings thicker, which isn't what you want when bearing wear seems to be caused by already tight clearances. Or you can just replace OEM with OEM.

Once I hit 3yrs I'm changing the color to Austin yellow, painting the wheels in matte black, tinting the windows and replacing the exhaust to MPE.
Why that one? Brand "loyalty"? Because otherwise it is probably the worst option for this car.

Mine is supercharged (supercharged and changed rod bearings at 48k miles), currently has 56k miles. I will keep this car for at least 70k more miles.

Keeping mine at least another 5 years. It's difficult to move to another BMW without v8 once used to S65. To be honest, so far M4 photos are not that impressive.

i recently saw the new 435 or whatever it is at the dealer and wasnt that excited by it. trend is a smashed looking nose area compared to the past with several of their lines. the headlights are squished down as is the kidney grill and the hood closure still irks me, dont like that arrangement. then read about the new m3/m4 in some magazine yesterday and didnt really like the whole look. the m3 looks like the past e90 m3 with extra charecter lines that i dont care for. cool things i do like are the cf roof on the 4 door, lap timer and rev matching manual.

The roaring NA V8 never gets old, runs much cooler, replace the E92 M3 with what.

Let's be honest, unless you're considering a $100k+ exotic, there's just nothing that compares with the visceral pleasure of our E9x's. (of the 4 passenger, daily driving options!)

Drive it like it's stolen, (once it's warmed up appropriately, of course!) and keep it till it's dead!

I picked up my 2012 DCT M3 in Jan 2014, I will swap over to a C7 Z06 in 2016-2017. Let them figure out any new car blues and the initial new car financial hit. As much as I respect the 911 P-car very hard for me to forget the value of a C7.

I got my first taste of a V8 coming from a Z4 SI no way I will budge on not having a V8 the garage.

Loving every minute of the M3 currently but looking ahead... "Never look back" my saying

Wouldn't an extended power train warranty cover the bearings?
