OEM Exhaust mod [details, pics and vids]

Read a few threads about this and wanted to try it out. There's a few ways people have modded these. Some just pulled out the stuffing in the middle can and wrapped the perforated pipes. Others welded in pipes in place of the perforated ones. We went with another method. Pictures below.

This is what the left and right cans look like inside if you've never seen them. They criss-cross thru the center of the muffler.

We cut out the pipes and re-directed the Y-pipe straight thru bypassing the center of the can.

Last step is to weld on the titanium tips and throw it on the car..

Painted it black..

I assume it would have been easier to cut muffler off and run straight pipes to tips. Would this be possible or would there be issues with mounting? If this is possible I would assume it would sound the same and you would realize a nice weight savings. How is the drone? Very nice work by the way!

The great thing about this mod is that fitment is 100% OEM obviously since only the internals are modified. Drone is completely non-existant. Sounds awesome at idle, acceleration and normal cruising. To give you an idea, it sounds a lot like the OEM performance exhaust.

I think we're gonna need you to cut open an M Performance to verify this.

this is what I asked in the other thread. it's no different than putting straight pipes from the resonators back. you sound deadening is from 2 sets of cats and resonators only.

This is my assumption as well. I cant wait to hear the video clip. I am surprised with so many exhaust out on the market for this car, no one has producted a simple set of straight pipes from the resonators back with some nice tips. Such as what SLP makes for the C6 corvette. This should be around $500 and IMO would sell like hotcakes.

Any videos?

EDIT - So I'm assuming this exhaust mod can be mated with the other exhaust mod that requires cutting the middle can open and removing the stuffing, correct? Don't you think that would sound bad ass?

Removing the stuffing out of the middle will have no effect on this mod in this particular instance. We are completely eliminating the flow through the center of the mufflers.

The stuffing is only needed when you leave some holes perforated. When you do it like Bart has done, there is no need for it anymore unless you just want the muffler to be nice and snuggly warm.

Sound like I should get a hold of an M3 and make some exhaust for you guys.

IT IS . Remember without the Helmholtz chambers, the M3 drones like a mofo. Those chambers are the little ones immediately after the connecting pipes enter the muffler. VERY effective .

By the way, many folks have done that mod of bypassing the middle absorption chambers, and it's basically the Dinan mufflers' design. Or better put, Dinan just copied the stock exhaust sans absorption chambers ... and couldn't even leave the dual outlets with real tips .
