exactly. i have the xdrive (hydro steering not ESM) and have since swapped out the RFT to A/S+ along with dinan suspension and stage 2 tune and it finally feels great. but i'm sure the M5 will be a monster. like i said. Motorsports just don't mess up their cars. maybe the SMG was clunky, but it was still ahead of it's time, and you could still get a manual.

i think M5 will be nuts

I considered an e60 m5 before buying my m3. I need a 5 seater, since I have three kids, but I just couldn't live with the size of the M5. Not weight/nimbleness, where the M3 likely has and will keep an advantage, but the phyisical size. I don't like big cars for some reason. I don't even like midsize. The smaller the better.

Just my 2 cents.

Two very different classes of car. I don't see the comparison beyond the fact that they are both BMW's. It's no different than comparing the 335 to the 550. Just a very different focus.

The M3, at 3700 lbs, is already past my personal desired weight for a sedan. It's my main beef with the car. Adding 500lbs more weight on top of that, and gobs more power to mask it, will *not* make for a better driving experience.

If you think the new M5 is the dog's balls, then by all means go buy one. I think its impressive, but only to look at from a distance. Sort of like the first time you see an elephant urinating. Big stream, but ultimately still an elephant.

Allow me to add my 2 cents worth since i own and drive both every other day. U do not wake up one day asking yourself whether u should buy the M3 or the M5. They serve very different needs. M5 is primarily targeted at a higher age group requiring more space and comfort, but importantly, a more mature image. Of course, being an M car, u bet it will drive and go like any M car should. Ask yourself if u need more space than what the E90 M3 dishes out. If u don't, owning the M5 becomes something u do for the fun of it. For me, the E90 M3 would have served my purpose pretty well, but owning the M5 is on my bucket list, so here i am.

Another factor to consider is the power delivery. If u are sick of the high revving nature of the S65, the M5 is a welcome departure. I have to say i enjoy both If u want the massive torque characteristic in an M car, but don't need the space and comfort, wait for the next M3. The F10 M5 never feels its size unless u are maneuvering in tight spaces. Despite what the BMW marketing material would have u believed, the M5 is not a track machine first even though it goes pretty fast around one. It would feel its weight on the track and consequently, feels less rewarding. U are certainly welcome to take it to the track, but don't buy one for this purpose.

As for fuel consumption, if driven like M cars should be, they both suck...

While I know there is quite a difference in price. Let's put price aside for a moment.

Stock M5 has
More power
More torque
Better track times
Better MPG
More luxurious
More room
More features
It's the new boss per Hammond

Stock M3 has
Nimbleness
Better exhaust sound
Screaming revs
Doesn't have that silly hood line
Carbon roof

Thoughts?
You forgot that the M3 has an induction note that is not generated by the car's speakers.

If I had to do it all over again....

loaded m3 75k vs 90k m5... I would folk up the extra cash and get the m5. Let me explain why...

1. POWER... new m5 is a beast... with a tune and a couple things youll be at 700+hp...I WANT THAT

2. Its newer

3. M3 isnt exactly a slim weight...I doubt the extra pounds will be that noticable for someone like me who doesnt track

The m3 after two years of ownership just feels slow to me.. or better yet not a lot faster then other cars I drive.

HOWEVER, give me 90k and ill be buying a gt3 rs right now

I had the same dilemma this past Xtmas, wait for the new F10 M5 or a new
E92 2012 M3...and??? I end up with a 2012 E92 Ltd Ed Frozen Silver M3 ZCP w/ M Performance Exhaust. To give you some perspective I also own a 2002 e39M5, 2003 S2K and the car I traded it in for the new M3...was 2006 E60 M5!!!

Here are a few reasons FYIt:

- I prefer NA engines to Turbo ones...nothing like high rpm if you enjoy driving...down and up shifting...

- Sound! Well, there is nothing like the S85 E60 V10 engine sound but the
S65 E92 V8 sound is as addictive and that's a lot to say...F10 active sound?? I reserve my comments....

- Size - the E60 was already too big for my like, so the new F10 is way too big of a car for me...the e39 is the perfect size for high-performance sedan...

- Interior - both of them have the same I-drive-Nav...everything else even though a little different, not enough as I like to drive not to play with gadgets...

- Looks - E92 M3 lines are magnificent and so well proportion...not too much not too little...stunning, after the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, best looking car!
F10 again, too long of a wheel base for my like...

- If you like torque, the "Beast" e39 is a blast, a few upgrades and you get 400hp and 400lbs/ft torque, and the car is superb, wonderful balance…

-The E92 M3 driving experience overall, the car feels much more tight and precise than the E60, and the brakes are excellent, plus nimbleness you mentioned; the car does everything I want a car to do…and you will always find a reason to drive it!

-The so praise F10 fuel efficiency MPG, well my E39 M5 gets 25MPG on the highway and 18MPG city…not bad for the “Beast”…

Just FYI – price was not a deciding factor…

If you like to be the Boss on the highway at high speeds, then it is an easy choice F10 M5…but remember there will always be something faster out there…

Any other Q’s feel free to ask anytime…
