It's a fact, BUT only on COLD startups, due to lack of proper lubrication (thick oil can't be pumped fast enough). And yes, the colder it gets, the worse it is for the engine due to oil being thicker, especially with the molasses-like TWS (glad I don't live up north ). That's also why you should wait to rev the engine hard until oil is fully warmed up, when it can flow/lubricate as designed.

Hey guys,

I just think it's funny that some of you think that auto-start stop will be such a detriment to your M3! Why would BMW incorporate a technology that will negatively effect the longevity of your vehicle?? It's not like the 2011.5 M3 is the first car made to use this feature.
Personally I welcome the technology and I'm glad I waited to order my ED e92 M3 (hopefully by December) and I'll be happy to increase my mpg by .25-.5 and also decrease my carbon footprint a little
So I understand if you don't want to use the auto start stop but don't discredit BMW for trying to make our cars more fuel efficient.

Had a quick read through the supplementary owners handbook and it confirms this. It says...

The engine is switched off subject to the following prerequisites:
- M double clutch transmission in Drive mode.

I don't know. Why would BMW try to hide issues with 335i's initially with software changes despite knowing that they have a legitimate problem on their hands until they got slapped in the face with lawsuits? Why would BMW hide subframe issues with E46 M3's until they got slapped in the face with lawsuits? Why would BMW not address the 2007(EU)-2008 BMW M3's having possible defective bearings, and change all bearings for 2009+ M3's without replacing the bearings on 07-08 M3's? Let's face it, BMW tends to know about things that are detrimental to the well being of a vehicle but likes to hide it unless negative publicity becomes too hard to handle. It's not a company known for acting proactively. My personal opinion, feel free to disagree.

While in Vegas last week, I took a 30 minute test drive in the new 2011 Porsche Cayenne S. It had the engine stop feature (could be easily turned off/on). With it on an getting caught at the notoriously long traffic lights around Vegas, every time I came to a full stop, the engine turned off. But every time it turned off, it felt like the Cayenne got tapped from behind by another vehicle. It did restart as soon as I moved my foot from the brake pedal. It also would start while still stopped when the vehicle sensed that the a/c needed the compressor to be run by the engine.

If I had this feature on my M3, or any vehicle for that matter, I don't think I would use it because of the above tap from behind nuisance. Maybe I would get used to it and maybe with the DCT, the M3 wouldn't give the feeling like it just got tapped by another vehicle.

My 2011 E90 M3 is due in next week... You can be sure I will turn this "feature" off. If I cared about gas mileage, I'd get a prius.... (which ain't going to happen!)

I thought it was the opposite, there was a button to turn it ON if you wanted to.

Have not experimented but I think the car recalls the last setting so if you have it off, it stays off. Have it on when you turn off the car and it comes on upon restart...

FYI... This start/stop feature is in manual 6speed too.

for those of you who are worried about starter failure, just pray that if it does break down, it'll happen with the 4 years/50k miles. then it'll be all covered.

IMO this "feature" would be annoying 100% of the time.
