I may be in the minority opinion here, but I'm not a big fan of the new 3/4 series headlights and kidney intakes. Seems like the headlights are squished and the kidneys are poking out too much.

However I'll wait and see what the //M cars look like in person before I make my final decision. Magazine pictures don't always do a car justice.

In fact, in terms of overall performance, all factors included, the current M3 is as good as it gets in a car that can properly seat more than 2 people. I don't think the change from E9x to F8x will even be as great as from E46 to E9x. The F8x will definitely have more torque but application of that torque is still going to be traction limited. That is just the trade-off if you want RWD steering/handling dynamics.
The current car is not as good as it gets - no way. It could easily be better - simply making it lighter would make it a better car. My only complaint about the e9x is that it's not raw enough. If the new one is actually lighter with superior horsepower and torque, it will be a better car. Each successive generation has had significant improvement in performance - there's no reason to believe otherwise.

All that said, my money is that the car will end up being a mini 6-series. Extremely powerful and fast, but very lux and lacking in personality.

High revving V-8 w/underwhelming torque v. I6 TURBO with massive torque theoretically possible, ease of upgrading hp, etc. Entirely different chassis.

Using your technology analogy, it's more akin to going analog to digital, the cars just happen to be sold by the same company.

Think paradigm shift, not mild upgrade.

Not at all similar, quite possibly "better" numerically. But, like an iPhone update, may lose some of your favorite features of the previous model/software.

Richbot. Totally agree. If you can find me an E92 M3 to drive while I am here in AFG, please do. Until then, reading this forum keeps me sane and gives me something to look forward to, both in my down time and when I go home.
(My wife is beginning to question why car parts are arriving for a car we do not yet own.)

Here's a newsflash: it's an internet forum dedicated, in part, to mental masturbation about cars from a specific manufacturer, BMW. That's precisely why I come here; I would hazard a guess a large percentage of viewers/forum members as well.

To placate you, however, I promise I will drive more and spend less time on this forum when I get out of this f*cking *sh*thole. There, feel better?

E36 M3 is already the 996 of the M3s, IMO. Gets far less praise than the other three generations --at least the North American version anyways.

It's a paradigm shift AWAY from what M3's have always been with a high reving /M designed race inspired motor.

Totally agree; but it sure isn't a mild upgrade of the same platform a la iPhone 5 to 5s. That would be more analogous to LCI or "s" versions of an existing platform like the 335is. Same car just more.

I love when folks say the S65 has no torque. This engine NEVER stops pulling. All the way up to 8400 rpm. Can your turbocharged motor do that?
Won't launch u back into your seat but I don't need it to. I'll take "endless powerband" for $400 Alex.

Who said "no torque?" It is simply irrefutable that turbo motors produce more torque. It would be astonishing if the next turboed M didn't have more than 269 lb ft. For torque fans there's always the C63.

Any of you guys drive a tuned 135i or the 1M? I came here from that scene because of LAG. Whether folks want to admit it or not, those cars lag, as do most, if not all, turbo cars. Sure, they'll push you back in your seat, but you have to time your right foot in negative seconds on the track. I hated that.

The S65 is a universally revered engineering marvel of its time, and I hope that BMW ///M has figured out the lag problem, but I'm not convinced.

As for 996 comparos, I could give a rat's ass. I love this car right now, but I'm sure it simply journalistic prose (or trolling) vs. reality.

I was referring to autospies.

Why would anyone care what others have to say about the car we drive today?

I believe what I know, feel and experience today counts and what tomorrow brings is a complete other matter, something to be explored when it does become reality and actually exists

Seriously...Thank you
I don't care if this is better than that, that is better than this.
If anyone feels that way, go buy one that people recommend and love, and you probably won't be wrong going that direction.
I'm just gonna stick with whatever I love to drive.

Having owned an x5m, 135i, Fiat Abarth, an x3 2.8i(turbo) and a GTR - I've got an idea of what a turbo engine is capable of. This is why I came back to the e92. I agree the next gen car will be faster but it won't necessarily be better.

My apologies for having taken your comments out of context. I did not think that your post referred to me specifically, but to the forum collectively and not to Autospies.

I have faith bmw will come out with a better M3. The F10 M5 has been amazing so far. It has more power and it's more efficient compared to the previous version.
