iPhone for phone and music. Which options to get?

Hi,

I am configuring a 2009 M3 Sedan and I am a little bit confused on what options to select in order to use the iPhone 3G.

This is what I want:

1. Be able to connect the iPhone to iDrive and hear from the car speakers when in a phone call.
2. Sometimes change the iPhone (not connected to the charger all the time but be able to use the phone functionality at least)
3. Use the iPod application within iPhone to listen music from the car speakers and control the iPod application using iDrive
4. Have both music and phone accessible at the same time (meaning not having to remove/replace/plug different cables to use the phone or iPod application)
5. Be able to connect another iPod mini and hear music from the car speakers and control the iPod mini using iDrive

I am a little bit confused on what options to get.

Configuring the car there are these options:
There is an "iPod and USB Adapter"
then there is the "Smartphone Integration"
also the "BMW Assist with Bluetooth Wireless Technology"

also I am reading that there is a "Snap-in adapter" (not available when you configure the car) and also a Y cable.

Can someone tell me what options I need?

Thanks

Hey xsi123, you'll need both the iPod/USB adapter to connect the iPhone to the system for music and power AND you'll need the BMW Assist w/ Bluetooth to speak and hear via the car's microphone and speakers. It will meet all of the needs you listed.

I have the iPhone 3G and use it in these ways. Hope this helps.

The snap-in adapter is likely the cradle for the iphone...which I am pretty sure a 3G cradle has not been released yet. Not mission essential, just a nice to have!

omegatlc,

thanks for the input.

How is the phone quality with the Bluetooth hands free system?

Also do you know if the BMW Bluetooth system supports A2DP? I know iPhone will support it in version 3.0 (due this summer).

Some people say that this might improve phone signal but I have no idea.

The 3G snap in adapter is available. It is part number 84 21 2 151 043. It will improve you cell signal because it uses the shark fin. The best price I was able to find was from my dealer and using my BMWCCA discount. Original retail price 279! My CA got it for invoice price which was 189 and with car club discount it was 145.

Actually there are two cradles available for iPhone 3G, #84212151043 & 84212151038.

Do you have Smartphone Intergration installed?

Because part #84212151043 will only work if you have Smartphone Integration installed,
It will charge, play music and improve cellphone signal.

Otherwise you need to get part #84212151038 which will only improve your cellphone signal and charge your phone,
No iPhone control via steering wheel or play music from iphone.

Dont mean to thread hijack, but I have a similar question on the 2008 e92. I see a part # for the 2008 e92 on the bmw accessories page - 84 10 9 182 793

I am buying a car with bluetooth, but no 6fl. I have asked for the iphone adapter kit (84 10 9 182 793). Will this allow me to play music from my iphone?!

Is this the correct part #? Is this just the cradle, and there is some other part I need to get it working?? I think the site said something about needing another part.. so confusing. I guess I just need to know what parts are required to hook up my iphone with all functionality. The dealer said the install required going behind the radio for hookup, but I never thought that it might play mp3's through my iphone.. Is this just a 2009 idrive feature?

Are you sure the part# is 84 10 9 182 793 not 792?
http://accessories.bmwusa.com/ItemVi...&productId=948
This part won't allow you to play music from your iphone but will charge and imporve reception.
And you also need to get "Eject Box" to make that cradle works.

I have my custom made cradle/dock installed,
It will charge and play music from iPhone but no connection to the roof mounted telephone antenna.
I will post new thread soon, stay tuned.

How strange, when I went to that page before, I just copied the part #.

Do you have a part # for the eject box?

Ya let us know on your prototype. Thanks for the info

All the options that you listed are required in your order with your M3 if you want to meet your needs.

The iPod cable will be included with the USB adapter option, however the Smartphone-specific iPhone 3G snap in cradle (84212151043) will not be included with the option.

You cannot have access to the iPhone music if the USB adapter is in use. It is an either/or music access.

xsi123:

Quality is good for iPhone use vs. Bluetooth. Sound is clear and I have less incidences of people saying I sound muffled vs. previous cars with bluetooth. Regarding A2DP, I'm not sure about that...in fact, I haven't heard of it (time to do some research).

Update- I've heard of the capability, but didn't know the official name for it. I'd bet against the current BMW model lines having this capability AND producing a high quality link/sound.

Now go and place that order!!!

Question, I know this tread is old but here goes. If one does add the IPOD/USB feature and BMW Assist with Bluetooth and the snap in cradle. Well I be able to have my iphone plugged into the cradle for phone features and then place my ipod in as well for music? Just wondering...

The idrive will play the ipod if it is hooked to USB and the iphone for music as a second source when the ipod is unplugged.

I have the iphone cradle and the smartphone option but it can't play music when the phone is in the cradle. Does this mean that I my CA got me the wrong cradle?

I have a 2009 e92 that I picked up today, and a 2008 iPhone that I got 6 months ago.

With the iPhone connected in the armest with the supplied cable, I get a message on my iPhone that I have connected it to a device that is not made to function with an iPhone. I can have access to the music on my iPhone (ie. use it as an iPod), but doing so turns on Airplane mode, so I can't receive calls or use bluetooth. If i manually turn Airplane mode off, I have to re-pair my iPhone with the car. This is very annoying and I refuse to go through this every time I get in the car. I am also told that it still won't allow me to have both functions (iPod and iPhone) available.

Any solutions?

The cable simply does not have an authentication chip embedded, no need to worry. The message will go away on its own after +7 seconds or simply press "no".

No features are lost.

Note your phone won't charge while plugged in, which is annoying, but not life threatening.

6FL charges the phone, the BMW-branded iPod kit will not.
