6MT vs M Double Clutch Transmission
Hey guys,
I've finally sold my 335i and the 850i. It's time to get into the M3 having said that I made the mistake of driving a 09 M3 with M Double Clutch Transmission today. All of my cars have been manual for reasons I don't have to go into as I'm sure many of you know why. After driving the M Double Clutch Transmission M3 today I was left speechless and for the first time ever am considering buying it instead of the 6MT. I have read over 20 pages of what people have said about the two transmissions. After reading many rants about mine is better, no mine is, I'm left with some unanswered questions: 1) Has anyone like Fifthgear tested the difference in speed between the two? How much faster is the DCT? (I wasn't able to find anything on YouTune) 2) Launching with the DCT? On occasion I love to burn some rubber in 1st & 2nd gear. With the 6MT that's not much of a problem because I can rev it up before the launch. The DCT I know has a Neutral gear but are you able to rev it up and press the peddle into first gear to get that nice burning launch? 3) Revving while moving. Say we are in 3rd gear rolling, are we able to rev the engine by placing it into neutral? 4) Previous 6MT lovers. I would hate to regret the decision of going DCT especially on a car that costs this much. Those of you who have been in love with Manual and have switched to DCT, do you have any regrets? Thanks for the help. Ado

i too was awed by the dct...but once i drove the manual, i felt a "connection" with the car. the dct is superior in performance, tracking, and technology, but personally, the romance of a high-revving M v8 is (slightly) lost...also, the dct kinda makes this car to easy to drive, i cant make a mistake, its brilliant...but no challenge, unless i want to die.
I have zero regrets about 6mt decision. |

Agree w/ both replies above. Drove both, 2x, and chose 6MT. However, if I tracked a lot and did a lot of urban commuting I would have chosen M-DCT.

same here. test drove couple of dct. it's noticeably faster than 6mt specially on the shifting (obviously). however, we ended up with 6mt and no regret at all. a lot more connected to the car. it depends on what you want, for us speed is good but we don't need to race every light out there, we enjoy the driving experience more
funny the other day my wife told me she's so glad we got the 6mt instead of dct coz' she's having so much fun |

Guys, there is enormous number of posts on this topic. Really ENORMOUS. Try using google to search the forum. It is was better than the search built into to forum. Use booleans as well. For example give this a try:

I like the DCT because it is so easy to aggressively downshift. I do not have enough years of life left to master heal and toe to that degree. I think I'd like the 6 MT as well, but as an instructor at the CCA HSDE who owns one noted, the DCT is so good its almost like cheating.

I do miss downshifting and doing heal-toe blips and getting it just right. There's nothing more satisfying while driving. On the other hand, the DCT shifting is FAST; like you don't feel any let up when you up shift fast, and the down shift blips are prettys sweet. BUT, there's that damn second gear lag, that still pisses me off at times.
If I were to get a 6MT, I'd definitely get a short shifter because it was like rowing a boat when I drove the manual. There's no right or wrong answer here. It is more rewarding to drive the manual car, but it's also really nice to be able to put it in auto mode when I get a call.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

This is an example of what you'll see 90% of the time when reading posts that discuss this matter.

#2: I believe you need to have your foot pressing the brake down before it will allow you to shift it into gear. So I believe you cannot do that. Although, I've never tested if you can rev the engine while in neutral, just barely push the brakes with ur left foot, slap the stick to the right to put it in gear and then let go of brakes at the same time. I wouldn't want to try it either.
#3: While driving you can push the stick to the left to put it in neutral, as long as you're not pressing the gas. So you can drive, lift off the accelerator, then put it in neutral. When you push the stick back into drive, it will always shift into the gear which is appropriate for your current speed. |

Short answer, I do not. But, there are always a ton of posts on here about 6MT giving a feeling of being connected or about M-DCT low speed lag. So I'm probably in the minority. In this car, I really like the M-DCT. I drove a couple of the 6MT M3s and the shift action felt indirect and vague. In a P-car I would make the oposite choice as I'd prefer the Porsche shifter over the PDK. Actually, I'd also ditch the DCT in the new Z4 as well because of the paddle interface (like PDK) and not holding revs at redline. Handling is the number one quality I look for in a car. I have a blast dropping gears before turn in and firing off upshifts after exit in my M3. I enjoy heel toe downshifts, but I just don't find it any more challenging or fun than M-DCT execution in the M3.

DCT is perfect for me. I have a wife that can't drive stick, plan on keeping my 330 and still need to keep the wife out it.
